Not hiring entry level workers due to AI adoption is definitely a tragedy of the commons as everyone will benefit from having a cohort of experienced Gen Z workers in 15 years yet few want to hire them today.However I doubt AI in 15 years will need the human oversight that LLMs currently require.

I regularly see people confidently claim that big tech companies like Amazon are going to go broke spending hundreds of billions on AI because “it doesn’t work” and customer demand is fake.It reminds me of other confident arguments that Amazon didn’t understand the dynamics of its business.

GitHub had an almost 8 hour outage this month. Monthly commits have doubled since April and a critical system couldn’t handle the load. Client retry loops then made recovery worse.A design failure I hit early in my career. OpenAI and Anthropic have gone in different directions on safeguards to detect malicious usage of their models.Anthropic requires prompts and outputs to be retained for 30 days for analysis while OpenAI will do pattern analysis without data retention.OpenAI has won this round.

A sad truth is most companies do not know how to assess the quality of knowledge work. This is why they resort to RTO policies because they can’t simply judge if people are working better or worse from home.This is also why they think all AI usage is good when most of it is obviously counterproductive.

I think the focus on alignment at frontier labs is misguided.If you don’t want Claude deleting emails, don’t give it that permission or require human approval.Trying to “teach” an unreliable LLM that deleting emails without asking is bad is a fool’s errand. This applies to all dangerous actions.
