I just looked out the window at the late afternoon sun and it was like staring into the glaring maw of Godzilla as he's doing that breath ray thing. The sun does that in all directions. Has done for a long time. Absolutely mind-blowing.

How can we live in harmony with nature?First, just to get this out of the way, if you have money you can just buy an ecologically harmonious lifestyle off-the-shelf. I'm not going to go through all the options, there are consultants you can hire, if you got the moolah. You can super-insulate your house, retrofit your old appliances, buy solar panels and EVs, etc. Go for it!

What does it even mean to live in harmony with the ecology? First of all it means that you don't take more than you need and you don't cause pointless damage, and you return your waste to the system. It's kind of incredible, but that's really all the rest of the world requires of us: basic consideration and our poop, pee, and exhalations.

It means to refrain from flying and from driving. It means that you should grow your own food if you can, and what you can't grow you should buy from people you know, people who live nearby and who grow their produce in ecologically harmonious ways.This isn't just about getting and eating healthy food. You should try to spend your money locally, and buy from local people who also buy locally. Circulate those dollars within the regenerative subset of the economy. This is pretty urgent.It's not going to get less hot. Those "heat waves" are not waves, they're the new normal.It's scary, but it means that you have a real good reason to do something radical and constructive.Get out of the city, get onto some land, start an "eco-village" with your friends and family.

Sister went up to the land yesterday and brought back all the loose (that is to say in pots) plants, and water the in-the-ground ones.A Pacific Chorus Frog (was Pacific Tree Frog but science scienced it more better and is now "Chorus") hitched a ride in the chocolate trees' tub.The plan is to wait until dusk and release it near a nearby known frog haunt.I want to keep it as a pet, of course, but no, that would not be responsible.(Photos to follow, by and by...)

Here is the frog. It should be safe in there until dusk. Behind the hotel there is an unkempt semi-wild field, in the corner of the field there's a large depression, and in that depression is a rather nice pond. The little frog should be okay there, eh?

The frog was successfully released at the pond. I couldn't get a good photo of it, but here's one of the pond.(How cool is it that there's this smack of nature in the center of this city block? Asphalt and concrete all around and yet there's this outpost of the real world.)

One gigabyte to download Qemu, a quarter of a gigabyte of Fiwix, and there is a virtual computer...How much would I have to study to truly understand this system?x86, Qemu, C, POSIX, Fiwix source, packages (GNU & others)Good God even at the height of my brain power this would take months and months just to get a baseline. The esoterica could consume lifetimes.

The rise of GitHub seems to me one of the strangest things in the world. I've heard it called "the front page of the FOSS movement"! But the code for GitHub is not available on GitHub! It was weird enough when a closed-source proprietary company put themselves in front of an open-source distributed VCS and got traction, but then they were acquired by Microsoft!? That's like Sauron buying the Shire and charging the hobbits rent on their own land or something.

I think I posted this before, so apologies if you've heard it. (I'm going through older files and cleaning things up.)In re: funding for FOSS...It's very hard to write correct | ergonomic software. It takes a long time to learn how to do it (for most people. There are a handful of savants that seem to be able to do it naturally.)

Software is eternal. ("Bit rot" is a misnomer.) Once written it endures exactly (if properly cared for), and can be enacted by emulator if the original hardware is unavailable.We really only need a small amount of "core" software, and it should be written by savants and those who care enough to do the work to make themselves savantish.

As it is arranged now our global economy is inconceivably wasteful and heartbreakingly destructive. It doesn't have to be this way. We can change our ways and avert the worst of the climate disaster, or we can run off the edge of the cliff and crash, bringing a lot of the global macroscopic ecosystem with us.

We can construct a civilization that automatically provides a high standard of living to all without the need for all the drudgery while improving the life of the Earth. (I'm talking about a four hour work week.)Once we do that the problem of funding FOSS disappears.
