       this type of discussion has gotten a lot more common over the past 6 months, but nobody is saying anything new. it’s not a coincidence that’s occurred over a period where everything else has stagnated. things are getting worse for the average man, and while things have been bad before, it has genuinely never been like this. marriage is the greatest example of that: as we’re all aware, there has not been a single civilized society in the history of the world with a lower rate of marriage.all of that decline occurred within the last 50 years. men of wedding age today do not know what a normal society is like. they were born well into the decline and grew up watching things get progressively worse. the institutions that had for millennia guarded marriage failed in every measurable way over the course of their lives. they have no reason to believe those institutions are going to turn around and save them now. but those men have very little power to change the course of society themselves. at the rate things are happening, those men know they’ll be old and grey well before society changes back. So why is the discussion happening now? young men’s only hope is pure luck or radical change, and nothing about their lives thus far would make them bet on the former. all of them are hoping for something completely unprecedented just in case of the off chance it shakes something back into place. but they’ve experienced progressively more obscene and absurd events, events which previously have toppled empires over the past 10 years and nothing has even shown signs of halting the relational decline, let alone fixing it. every week, they open their phone and see a new crisis, then go out and see no change but the same slow march towards societal death they’ve witnessed the rest of their lives. young men are watching their lives slip away and they’re getting anxious. they’re not learning anything new in these discussions. they’re trying to convince themselves that it’s not going to change and they need to move on.
