@dalias Yeah I dunno. It seems like there's actual motion on that front. Frontier systems are starting to be in the realm of "nation-states may in fact use these meaningfully against smaller crypto keys".The rumblings are a lot more immediate now.

@aral Honestly I don't actually hate this.It's a tool. The _user_ is responsible for what they're submitting. It's putting code generated by them in their name. I think this is actually good.

@dalias Right. You're appealing to a definition of "FOSS" that isn't entirely clear what it is. And the people who do usually have (some) claim to that authority, the common uses of it, are not the ones you're using.I'm sympathetic to that but I can't tell what it is in an appeal to an unstated norm for a community that I can't quite identify.

@dalias Got examples to show to support that position? Remember copyright is a _legal_ regime and the legal regime seems quite oriented toward that NOT being the case.

@IngaLovinde @dalias That's the thing. If it matters _tell the people submitting PRs_. The tool is just a tool (a capricious annoying frustrating tool) but it's the _people_ doing this that need to be accountable.

@adamgreenfield Yup. His speech patterns are a style I understand the meanings behind and they're not incoherent most of the time.But he is also showing a lot of signs of dementia _and_ he's got the cognitive atrophy of being surrounded by yes-men his whole life. He's addled the way dictators get addled. Disconnected from reality in that he literally lives in a different immediate reality, a cocoon created by his power and capriciousness.

Fascists, cryptobros, young men who play tons of video games and have very little ethical thinking skill and frame everything as a competition to be won, seasoned software engineers, accelerationists, business guys, Business Guy Grifters, hyper-neoliberal technocrats, wannabe software engineers, kids who dream of creating video games, product designers who want to prototype things, capitalist hangers-on and investmentbros who are looking for the next gamble for their money, Chinese tech company employees, third world techies who use these tools to be able to play at the rich countries tech industry table, edgy young men who want to “decensor" everything including open models, tech enthusiasts who want to try every new thing.And very, _very_ few women. And very, very few experts.

One thing I don't see anyone talking about that we probably should is the proliferation of captcha-busting anubis-busting browser-as-a-service services. It's not that the big model companies are scraping the web and ignoring robots.txt. (Some are, almost certainly, but there are datasets to train on already and they're not scraping random sites so much)It's that agent _users_ and the people serving them have a very large demand to access information with semi-automated systems. And they're building whole armies of ways around blocking.

Here's a couple thought experiments:Would you allow an AI company to make a model trained off your open source licensed work, if the model was guaranteed to be open weights under an MIT-like license, and the training dataset was public?And Do you think that the existing licenses of open source work allow this already? (answers may vary by license)
