Seeing the whole 'corporate pride is fake' thing going around again, and I have a few thoughts to share on this;1) those are usually organized by actual LGBTQIA+ allies at those companies, not just empty marketing- but that's my personal experience.2) This is also the reason why you won't see it in countries which are actively hostile and make it actually illegal to be LGBTQIA+ aligned, not because they're 'selective'.3) I'd rather have more, than less allies, but that's my personal take.

that doesn't mean you shouldn't be wary, doesn't mean you should be suddenly cutting them slack on other issues they have, or pretend their work culture and ethics are flawless, even when it comes to the LGBTQIA+ topics.But it does feel rough to see colleagues who are 100% well intentioned getting shouted at and hated for no other reason than people perceiving it as hostility, when it really is not what it's intended to be.I really wish people would come together more. We're in this together

because to be quite frank, it takes quite a lot of coordinated efforts to set up and carry forth pride events at e.g big tech companies.And to go through all that effort, just to be met with hostility from people who you presumed to be actual allies, is disheartening, and feels very wrong.If you want to build a better world, if you want places everywhere to be more friendly towards these things, I personally don't think infighting over what is essentially puritanism, will do anyone a favour.

It's easy to dunk on Arch's #AUR issues while ignoring what's going on.- It involves some accounts that have been around for years, this is a sophisticated and well-planned attack.- As much as AUR is very central to Arch, every big distro has its own 'alternative' package platform, like Fedora's Copr and Ubuntu's PPAs.- Despite early discovery and coordinated efforts, it is still ongoing.I think the rest of the ecosystem should take this as a warning.Linux is not just magically secure.

And note that that's not to say "Linux isn't secure".It's to say that with Windows rapidly losing relevance, Linux is going to only get more and more of a lens on it.APTs, fuzzing tools, security analyzers, LLMs, the list of new threats is growing rapidly.The time from finding issues to active exploitation in the wild has gone from years to hours over the last decade. And, note that this is ALSO not to say "we're all doomed" or whatever.It's simply to say we need to take this seriously.We can't just sit and point and laugh while allies are getting attacked. We are in this together. Find ways we can help each other forward.If you wanted to learn more about cybersecurity, now seems to be an excellent time.What are you doing to keep your data safe? How are your backups (that you're not keeping on the same device)? Do you need help with any of this?

@icedquinn I think a lot of distros are doing well in this sense, arch isn't as much but honestly the main attack vector was AUR here, not the main repos (although it could still become that one day).I do still wonder if security is going to be something people actively care about some day, more than just features. it feels like we're heading into a time where it's unavoidable, but I guess we'll see when the stuff on VNCresolver starts disappearing :P

@icedquinn I mean people ignoring it has been the case so far, definitely. At most when it's convenient as an empty promise on a big tech product. But losing everything can be pretty convincing heh. in the era of ransomware and nothing being sacred, if people aren't going to care before it's too late, then they probably will afterwards.I can imagine it's tiring though, explaining it to people. I've left cybersecurity for a reason, long ago, but I have to say, it really feels like it's changing

I wish more people understood how unreasonable it is to tell people working at big tech to 'just quit your job'. Like sure, and where do I go then?There's nothing in this area, and even if I move across the country there are few options that have the same benefits and pay for this kind of work.And more importantly, how is it more reasonable to tell people to quit their job, than stop using the big tech thing yourself? YOU are making them this powerful, not me, stop blaming the working class.

new rules:- If you complain about datacenters without a grain of nuance, you're immediately required to disconnect from the internet entirely.- If you complain about big tech without nuance, you're no longer allowed on any services hosted by them, and I don't just mean Youtube and Android, I also mean random banks and government services and "actually good messengers" like Signal (AWS)..Or how about we actually vote for better regulation, and make the world more equitable and fair instead?

saying "LLMs often generate bad code" doesn't really land with the people you're trying to reach because the same could be said about humans. it's a moot point.emphasise its use as a (optional) tool instead; you can't replace a carpenter with a nailgun either, you'd need to understand what you're doing.No middlemanager is going to be able to build the next Kubernetes using LLMs, because they don't even know what a container is to begin with. Use that.

@fdroidorg so i don't mean to be 'that person' but, as far as I can tell this doesn't affect fdroid as much as I initially thought.for one, this shouldn't apply to FOSS ROMs like Lineage/Graphene/etc.It's a mechanism purely employed by the Play store, and only on 'Google Certified' ROMs, and even on there you can just enable 'unverified installs' indefinitely, it just takes 24h to enable, and warns you with every install, which is annoying, but not impossible.unless I missed something?

@davidrevoy I think it's just something people struggle with, they will make deranged statements in pursuit of trying to seem like they're still on top of things.I know it's easy to say, but don't take it personally, I've always been a fan of both your art and your open source tooling/process.This stuff is one reason I'm really happy the EU is requiring AI involvement to be labeled as such; it works both ways, and hopefully other countries/areas will follow, so we can put an end to this.
