       @rrr @fiore ive used nushell a bit and I find it nice sometimes but nowhere near as developed as powershlle. I use both nushell and powershell occassionally to solve specific problems but my daily driver shell is still fish

       PSA: When you are linking to an article on Wikipedia to point out something interesting about it, please use the revision-specific link to the current revision and not the main one that will go whatever the newest revision is!To get that link, click on "View history" (a clock symbol with a counterclockwise arrow on mobile) and then click on the date of the latest revision.        I kind of hate the tendency of programs to grow ever more general purpose due to a failure of the operating system to provide adequate tools, integrations and multitaskingThe primary examples I can think of are browsers and text editors / IDEsThe fact that browsers have tabs is a failure of the operating system to provide good windowing (which would include tabs)The fact that IDEs have their own file browser is a failure of the OS file browser to have a widget modeThe biggest failure in terms of multitasking and integrations occurs in the terminal. The graphical shell already has a lot of features that terminal users are forced to reinvent, or provide via a surrounding graphical shell in terminal emulators. Tmux, Emacs, Bash job control, multiple VTs—these are all poor substitutes for window management. The terminal doesn't even have a clipboard so Vim reinvents it.It's possible the Vi yank feature came before actual computer clipboards, but Vim still has this reimplementation for some reason. The same applies to the other terminal deficiencies, I think. So the terminal is really a different kind of deficiency. Windowing in the browser has exceeded normal windowing, but a whole system that many people use exclusively has exceeded the terminal in capabilities.Perhaps the next logical step, then, is that the windowing system will be subsumed by the browser. Just as windowing used to be a program launched from the terminal, and now the terminal is a program launched from the graphical shell.Will we accumulate more and more such layers over time? I hope not. I hope we take the lessons from new layers and instead use them to make a more robust ground layer. I don't think building an ever higher tower of user interface abstractions is wise. That's something Windows NT got right, conceptually.

       one thing I don’t understand about research into ancient texts like manuscripts of the bible is how it’s possible we’re so unsure about what the purpose or context of a lot of these arespecifically because modern texts have loads of contextual clues absolutely everywhereyou have summaries on the back of books, titles, indices, forewords, chapter titles, titles repeated in the margins, footnotes, author biographies, ads for other books, imprints, book spines, copyright notices, logos, and so on and so onobviously often we only get fragments but like I feel like we should be getting some snippets of context lots of the timelike you’re telling me some books of the bible were just from other texts put together and nobody ever wrote something like "compilation of creation accounts" or something at the top?

       @brettm Sure, but if you had a bible today without "Bible" written on it people would still know what it was. Yet we still write "Bible" on it. And if you have some office paperwork to keep track of something regularly everyone knows what it is but you still often write "meeting attendance list" or "bonus payouts" on it

       @sodiboo @fiore I have done the Docker socket inside Docker thing with Docker compose* by adding a bind mount volume${DOCKER_SOCK}:/var/run/docker/docker.sockand an environment variableDOCKER_SOCK: /var/run/docker/docker.sockto the compose.yaml and then running the compose thing with DOCKER_SOCK=<where the actual docker socket is>*actually Podman compose, which is the reason I used an environment variable (the Podman socket is in a different place)

       @davidgerard systemd didn't add age verification tho? it's very weird to see a conspiracy hereclarification: I don't think they are a conspiracy. what I'm saying is this post sounds like they think there is a conspiracy (which I think there isn't)
