As I like to go walking, and I tend to take a photos while I do, I'm going to start a #photography thread.I will limit it to 4 photos per post, as #mastodon just hides anything over and what's the use of federation if most people only see partial posts.Here's the first set, all taken in #Berlin(1/x)

A thing that many people don't realise,is that if you get neoliberals in your government, they will actively work on making your government work worse.Neoliberals want services, like transit, healthcare, etc, to be privatised because their friends can make profit off of running these thing. People will not want these services to be privatised if they run well.The classic playbook, and this playbook has been running for about as long as I've lived, is to starve government services from money, while also making them more bureaucratic than they need to be. This makes these services inefficient, insufficient, and over time, unpopular.When the quality of these services becomes bad enough, and the reputation of these services bad enough, the neoliberals in government will start saying that privatisation is the only way to improve these services (for example in the case of healthcare), or that people just prefer to use a private alternative (for example driving in the case of rail). Of course, they purposely ignore that these options only seem better because they've been ruining the governmental services themselves.In short, governmental services don't need to be bureaucratic and shit, we can choose to make them at least, if not more so, as good as the private options.

Does Mastodon still only display 4 photos attached to a post? And I don't mean "does it only allow you to post 4 photos", but I mean that if someone using non-mastodon software posts more than 4 photos, does it still just ignore all pics above 4.

@tarajdactyl @mirabilos This, and to add to that, sites that close to force a language on you just because your IP is from that country, or sites/apps that assume the US way of doing this is the only way of doing things, like for instance, nobody ever would speak more than one language, right?

@david_chisnall It's a power fantasy. You now don't have to actually practice to give the illusion of competence. And it's not like there are many people (relatively speaking) who can recognise competence out there, which is why society only recognises fuck ups after big disasters.

Anybody who has ever helped others, especially less experienced people, with programming, or other tech stuff, knows that, when asked a question, the most productive response is the question "what are you really trying to do?". The reason why this is such a good response is because very often, the question asked was based on a false assumption, or a lack of knowledge. This problem often doesn't present itself in the original question, but becomes obvious when the real objective is known. Once you know the objective you can help the person by correcting their assumption, or telling them about something that will eliminate the need for the original question.Now imagine, that instead of responding with this question, you will literally answer their question, and never ask what they're trying to do. Do you think the outcome will be superior? Will this person come out more experienced and more knowledgeable?Now imagine a mathematical prediction model doing exactly this on an industrial scale, but then add it not actually understanding what it's doing, a habit of generating falsehoods, nor any capability of real learning.Yep, great tool, totally no downsides whatsoever.

Is there anyone that actually likes JSON-LD for an API? I honestly don't see the use for it there, and I end up just ignoring the whole LD-ness of it.Can anybody make a case for it? Or is it just that the w3c doesn't sign off on anything not using their pet abuse of JSON?:boost_ok:

@rustfoundation This is rather gross tbh, this erodes my trust in rust and its foundation...Sure, the money is nice, but it's wise to consider where the money is coming from... And in this case, the money is coming from one of the biggest destructive forces in our industry, the ethical choice would be to say no. See also python saying no to US government money.
