Day 2 sharing teaser #HistoryPix for "Inventing the Renaissance" (out in one month!). Often in Florence one sees buildings like this, where one section is rough stone standing out amid stucco neighbors. It's actually a remnant of the old Guelph-Ghibelline feuds that so long rocked Medieval Italy 1/?

Costa Rica has completely reversed its rampant deforestation from the 20th century, lifting natural forest cover from under 25% by 1985 to well over half the country today. A national payments for ecosystem services scheme helped, along with a 1996 ban on converting natural forest, a beef-price slump that reduced pasture profits, and booming ecotourism that created more incentives to keep forests standing than to cut them down. Human intelligence appears to emerge from whole-brain coordinationA neuroimaging study of almost 1,000 adults suggests intelligence is not located in one specific brain region. Instead, it reflects how effectively different brain networks communicate and coordinate across the entire brain. https://news.nd.edu/news/key-to-human-intelligence-lies-in-how-brain-networks-work-together/#ShareGoodNewsToo

EU moves to end animal testing for detergents and surfactants. Under the revised Detergents Regulation, animal tests for this category will be prohibited from mid-2029, and only scientifically validated non-animal methods will be allowed to assess risks to human health and the environment. ‘Truly spectacular’ drug for sleeping sickness simplifies treatment, raising hopes for eradication. European regulators have approved acoziborole, a new treatment for sleeping sickness that cures the disease with a single oral dose. The drug replaces complex regimens requiring hospitalisation, spinal taps and weeks of monitoring, making treatment far easier in remote regions. Experts say the breakthrough could help eliminate the disease this decade. https://www.science.org/content/article/truly-spectacular-drug-sleeping-sickness-simplifies-treatment-raising-hopes-eradication#ShareGoodNewsToo

Cities can now achieve “what was once thought impossible”: cutting air pollution by 20–45% in little more than a decade. A new analysis has found that 19 cities, including London, San Francisco and Beijing, cut levels of both PM2.5 and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) by more than 20% since 2010, driven by measures such as cycle lanes, electric vehicles and restrictions on polluting traffic. Caterpillars and ants communicate by dancing. There are certain caterpillars that ants like to take care of: they’ll protect these caterpillars along with their babies and the caterpillars in turn secrete sugary fluid the ants eat. But how do they communicate? Apparently by dancing, according to European scientists: the ants tap out a rhythm that the caterpillar matches. Viet Nam’s largest city is about to make buses free. Ho Chi Minh City, home to 14 million people, is preparing a $280 million annual plan to make all intra-city bus travel free, aiming to increase ridership by about 30% and reduce traffic and emissions. The policy builds on existing subsidies and a growing electric bus fleet. Sightings of humpback whale “super-groups” skyrocket, with researchers documenting a record 304 individuals in a single day off South Africa. Sightings of large aggregations have jumped from 10 to 65 per year in just five years, driven by recovering populations and abundant prey. Scientists say the phenomenon signals a major conservation success, with wider benefits for marine ecosystems through nutrient cycling and ocean health. Railway solar project turns unused track space into energySwitzerland is testing a simple idea: lay removable solar panels between train tracks to generate power from space that normally sits unused. A pilot in Buttes has installed 48 panels over 100 metres, producing about 16,000 kWh a year while trains keep running. If it scales, rail lines could double up as clean energy sources, without taking up extra land. SNCF https://www.groupe-sncf.com/en/innovation/solar-power-between-rails#ShareGoodNewsToo

Paris has transformed more than 300 streets outside schools into pedestrian-only “garden streets,” replacing traffic and parking with trees, benches and light-coloured paving. Researchers found the redesigned streets were on average 5°C cooler than nearby roads during summer heat. The projects, accelerated after the 2024 Olympics, are now reshaping school zones into permanent public health infrastructure focused on children, shade and cleaner air Torched https://www.torched.la/cool-streets/#ShareGoodNewsToo

SunZia, the largest renewable energy project ever built in the US, has begun sending wind power from New Mexico to California via an 885 km transmission line. The impact is already visible: in the month after SunZia came online, California wind generation rose 37% and gas generation fell 35%. That is what new transmission is supposed to do: move cheap clean power from where it is abundant to where it can displace fossil fuels. https://www.eenews.net/articles/largest-us-renewable-project-begins-generating-electricity/#ShareGoodNewsToo

A record 82% of adults across 138 countries say they are satisfied with their freedom to choose what they do with their lives, up from 71% two decades ago, according to Gallup. The biggest gains have come across the Balkans, Caucasus, Eastern and Central Europe, where the median has risen from a 2009 low of 49% to 82%. Scientists make the world’s most efficient solar panel. German researchers have built the most efficient solar panel ever, turning 34.4% of sunlight into electricity. That’s way higher than ordinary rooftop panels, which usually convert between 20-23%. This is a research breakthrough, not something you can buy for your roof yet, but it shows how much better solar panels may still become. HPV vaccine drives cervical cancer deaths close to zero. A landmark study in England has found girls vaccinated against HPV on the cusp of their teenage years now have effectively zero risk of dying from cervical cancer before 30. Between 2020 and 2024, no cervical cancer deaths were recorded in women aged 20 to 24, the first time that has ever happened. BBC https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c621z28z138o#ShareGoodNewsToo
