       @Geri I've literally spent hours discussing #OnlineSafetyAct this week.I am very familiar with the arguments, but remain unconvinced.  Ultimately, the few anecdotal "harms" mentioned from the few weeks it's been active are all decisions made by tech companies with totally opaque decision-making, yet blaming the government for their interpretation and decision.Sure, there are risks with data abuse and hacking.  But that was already a pervasive risk online, OSA is another degree of it.1/

       @mcnado You know the way to shift the Dem party to the left?Loads of progressives need to join the party and get active.  Take low level positions, become delegates, get votes.No one takes over from the top down, except billionaires.

       @EUCommission Interesting approach to a critical problem.Surely, it's not perfect.  There real challenge is to improve it, not enshittify it.Once again, the EU shows that regulation is the way forward on key issues, not laissez faire techbros.  Time for the UK and other countries to follow their lead.

       @protonprivacy What an absurd, hysterical take.Age verification only impacts access to age gated content.You can still access search engines, news sites, your banking and other apps, etc. Most of the online world is not age gated.Of course, we need proper data privacy regulation about any data collection, including age verification. That's the real fight, not scaremongering that allows adult content to run riot.

       @eff Of course age-gating is not "the" answer, but it is part of it. We know this fact from IRL.The full answer includes real and enforced data privacy, proper regulation, more open source and ownership rights, removal of corp and foreign players from key infrastructure and (yes) age-gating for certain content.Focusing on such a simplistic "age-gate bad" message only helps the techbros avoid any accountability at all.
