       My Deepest Trans LessonI recognized I was trans at the age of 15. But I spent a decade after that being "not 100% certain". I tried in that time to think my way to certainty. I had a psychologist who I thought was helping me to find certainty (but she was actually treating me for a personality disorder). Around and around I went, and I got nowhere.Then I read a book called In Search of Eve. It was 1990, and I don't know how a copy of that book ended up in my university library in South Africa. It changed my life because it destroyed the certainty delusion. The book presented transition as a ritual that didn't simply express an identity--instead, the ritual shaped and reinforced the identity. I could think till my brains dripped out my ears and it wouldn't help. I had to DO.It's like a seed can only find out it's a daisy by growing and flowering. Or it can sit in the seed packet forever, wondering.And this is why I am so angry with the transphobes and their "reasonable people" enablers, throwing obstacles in the way of trans kids to grow and learn and reinforce their identities. Transition is a positive feedback loop that saves people's lives.Disclaimer: I am autistic and struggle to interpret my internal state. Other trans people have different experiences.#trans

       For example, I hate those people who feel "gender questioning" kids should wait till they are older and more sure of themselves before any kind of transitioning. It is like saying "Wait until you are older before you start growing". Or "Wait until you are certain before you do the only thing that will give you self-assurance."

       How are we in a world where these two statements are widely seen as simultaneously true: (1) You always know when you see a trans woman so Sex Matters toilet terrorists are just fine, and (2) trans women are so sneaky the IOC has to catch them out with genetic testing?There has only ever been one trans woman athlete at the Olympics, and she finished last. It wasn't a trans sneak attack, the athlete made no secret of her history. There is no evidence at all of trans women "stealing" sport from cis women. In fact, trans women are underrepresented on the winner's podium. This ban is transphobic but the direct victims of the ruling are intersex and cis women who are now required to "prove" they are women. The violence is that people who have lived their whole lives as women will be told they aren't really valid.        Intersex pride.Of all the letters in LGBTQI, I think Intersex people are unique in that we often get added to the rainbow by society as soon as we are born, and unlike other queer people, our families often "know" about us long before we do.There is a conspiracy of silence to stop intersex kids from knowing about themselves. The reason "normalizing" surgery is done early in life is precisely because the event will not be remembered. In my case, my earliest memory is recovering from such surgery. It took decades to understand what that fragmentary memory was.Unlike the other letters of LGBTQI, intersex conditions often come with significant medical concerns. Amongst other issues, I had an endocrine crisis leading to severe arthritis in my early years. But my doctors were so intent on bolstering my normalized identity, they could not acknowledge or treat the problem. Ultimately, I accidentally fixed myself by starting hormone therapy as part of gender affirming care.The origin of this medical and social control is the 1950s era anxiety that if the child has an "abnormal" body, they will grow up gay. As bizarre as it may seem, the pathologization of intersex and the resulting nonconsensual and deceptive treatments are a form of "queer prevention" therapy.Intersex pride is about acknowledging that bodily diversity is the real normal. Intersex pride is about demanding treatment for the real health issues and an end for nonconsensual cosmetic treatments. Intersex pride is about resisting the identity policing and secrecy that society deems "good for us".#pride #intersex
