The most insulting thing this year is some douchbag came up with a shitty dotfiles repo and somehow got millions just for doing it. You know what I am talking about.I feel like tons of people have contributed to OSS desktop that should have gotten way more than that.

Another hot take of the day, I think people in software tend to overestimate the importance of software and how much software we really need. Most software on app stores do not need to exist. Most websites do not need to exist. Your average Joe does not need a fully customized app to handle their daily routine. Not every problem can be solved by just producing more code or throwing more compute at it.Obviously this is in the context of the current AI debate, but I honestly just think many people take software way too seriously. It certainly is in some contexts. But most people in software are not employed to write this kind of software. Regardless of AI or not, I do not want 100 apps that want to charge me money to do basic tasks in slightly different ways. The whole idea of "an app for everything" was just build on a premise that was never true and the current AI slop trend only made it much easier to produce this kind of stuff.I'm saying this because (1) as a software engineer myself, I do not think my profession should be considered at the same tier as professions that shall deserve more respect like lawyers or doctors; even long before AI we were no better than people in skilled trades, yet somehow we're taken to be more prestigious and make more money even though IMHO most people in this profession contribute next to nothing to society and possibly even negative depending on what you do; and (2) I think coding LLMs are useful and honestly amazing but they ultimately aren't going to bring dramatically more value to society than any other "low-code" or "no-code" solution to creating software -- they only made "low-code" or "no-code" more common (obviously there are other use cases that are still within software but not strictly just creating new code; they can be much more useful there!); the world does not need more software on a fundamental level.

@lispi314@udongein.xyz I tend to agree and I think software copyright abd software patent are especially bad. But the current free software ecosystem also kind of needs software copyright and patent lawyers... to defend against other software copyright and patent lawyers.
