       Soliciting the wisdom of people who are more seasoned in Fediversing. I may have a bunch of friends and loved ones who would be willing to join Mastodon if they didn't have to think too hard about which server to join. Many, but not all of them, are queer. Any recs what server makes a good default for my polycule partners and straight progressive friends?EDIT: My parents are also progressive and theoretically straight.

       @onepict @EUCommission it is obvious to most people, even if this particular phrasing is mine, that you cannot "big tech companies collecting PII" your way out of a "big tech companies collecting PII" problem.The only real solution is for these companies to know less about us, and critically, to not know who is of age. Until you're ready to treat that as a core requirement to build the rest of your online privacy policy around, you're not taking the problem of surveillance capitalism seriously.

       @ariadne I feel like I always heard that from adults who thought they were smarter than they really were, and overconfident in a small model of the world.Of course, the version I always heard was "saying something using profanity shows a lack of the education to say it properly." You can only believe this if your mental model of communication is small enough to exclude tone. It's valuable to know the professional way to tell someone to eat shit, but it's not going to have the intentional rudeness, and explicit unwillingness to waste effort on a troll, that you get from just telling someone directly to eat shit.

       @jzb it's as simple as this: tech is only partially secured and built via things like cryptography. A large part of it is human trust and informal standards of behavior. It works largely on the basis of being good neighbors with each other, and dissociating with entities who cause problems for the community.The AI industry are bad neighbors, and they will continue to be until they're too broke to hurt anybody.

       If I could make any kind of big statement for Disability Pride Month, it would be this: I would really like to someday live in a world where disability did not need to be legible to bureaucracy.I get why a lot of our current wins, like the ADA, are based on this legibility. But I also find myself in a reality where the things that actually disable me aren't taken too seriously by a lot of the people I know, while also having state-legible "disabilities" that I consider net positive or neutral in my life. Real dignity would probably involve caring what the actual body owner has to say about it. That lack of self-determination does feel like structural violence.In the meantime, having a hard line between the disabled and abled populations is fictional and arguably unhelpful. It's a spectrum, with a lot of people in middle places like "needs glasses." We'd have more solidarity if "abled" people didn't see a hard wall between themselves and those with higher medical needs.
