Today we learned two things: people do indeed buy climbing ropes from Aliexpress and abseil on them. And also that that's way more expensive than just buying reputable rope lmao

@azonenberg yeah lmao there's tons but tbh given the prices it's probably fairly legit for the climbing thickness stuff. The sketchy stuff is prolly more in the carabiners. There's of course also a decent amount of legit stuff but it's just not meaningfully cheaper. Tons of ascenders and descenders though like an absolutely ridiculous number and variety of designs it's crazy. Lots of figure eights too

@azonenberg the thing that I wonder is what about the scene in China means they don't have any other type of belay devices. Like I assume it's all rope access so belay isn't usually in the picture but it's weird to see absolutely no clones of the western semi-autos. I want to buy some of it to test while on backup out of curiosity but I also don't really want to reward the sellers

Hey so like just going to say it: we don't want our lives to fundamentally be about hate and upset. There's always always going to be some big problems in the world at large, in our fields, in our personal communities, etc. But do you win arguments by yelling back and forth? We certainly haven't. Though it might occasionally feel good if we already know we can't win. And yelling into a void so that people around hear you yelling? Not really that productive either. We can't imagine a life we'd like to live less than one that becomes defined by yelling and having people yell at us for not yelling correctly. And we certainly don't produce more reasoned judgement while fired up, highly doubt anyone else does. Spending your time engaging with that either actively or passively costs you; it costs you real emotional energy to get a constant input of bad even if it's not directed at you. Here on fedi we've consistently seen well spread posts about how Twitter was bad for that reason yet we consistently see people choosing to bring this aspect to their fedi feeds and their friends' feeds. Just don't do this. Don't be a person that people are scared of living their lives around.

Has anyone ever sat down and considered that maybe people like vibecoding because it's actually pretty fun to see your ideas come to life? Making analogies to other stuff seems fraught with LLM stuff so I'll avoid that but it seems a genuinely large portion of it is people really experiencing the joy of building things that they think are cool

Lots of people are not perfectionists about code or projects at all.Even before LLMs existed there were endless projects that people published that barely did the one thing they wanted and did it Very Badly. Think of things that should be standalone programs written as AutoHotkey scripts. I frequently encountered lots of YouTube videos where the creator had done things like that and I'd just think to myself "wow I can't even believe that worked tbh" or "well that probably explains why it didn't work so well for the video". But for a good portion of Loud People Online this kind of thing is never good enough.

There's a ton of project ideas that sit in our mind forever and never get touched. Usually we have the basic idea of what to do but the scope of doing it is immense or feels that way anyways. Often it involves one or two things we don't really know and probably can't build the skill for anytime soon. Such as experience with GUI frameworks. I can definitely understand why someone would take an idea like that and throw an LLM in the mix to try and jump those gaps.

I think the fact that people share so many of these projects goes to show that a lot of people want others to be able to use what they've made. I feel like that means a lot more than having used a particular tool.
