Nicht die Faulheit ist verwerflich, sondern die götzenhafte Anbetung der Arbeit! Was soll eigentlich dieser Blödsinn, "Arbeitslosigkeit" sei ein Problem? @fribbledom I've got dozens of terabytes of HDDs, mostly archives of stuff downloaded from the 'net. Ripped video and audio streams, pirated music, pirated ebooks, pirated cinema, pirated TV, pirated everything. And perhaps a terabyte or two of material I made, mostly photos and digital paintings.

@stux There may not be any visible Nazi trolls other than on a few instances most other instances defederated a long time ago, but there are right-wing bastards on the Fediverse who stay below the radar, they're using large instances and not really breaking the rules so the mods can't kick them out. And they're following many leftists, archiving and screenshooting our posts, making lists, reporting people to the cops. If you want a real safe space on the Internet, you need to build a darknet one, running on hidden services only accessible through networks like Tor or I2P, where everyone is anonymous.

@ariadne @sundogplanets I currently live on the outskirts of a small city where they shut down the street lights at midnight. I see those satellites all the time. And I can see how fast their numbers are growing. Well, I think we'll see a lot of pretty shooting stars when the Kessler Syndrome hits and a lot of debris begins to deorbit. It's a pity we won't be able to start any new satellites, let alone space probes, until it's all over though, and since the ongoing collapse of the Industrial Age will be a lot further along by that time, there might not be any resources left for satellites or space probes.

@stux The problem is that by doing something against the unsustainable practices of this civilisation, we will cause the economy to shrink no matter what we do exactly. The very size of the global economy is absolutely unsustainable, we're deep in ecological overshoot. And nobody is going to vote for someone who is going to shrink the economy.

@stux I have never seen anybody run over snowpeople with a car here in Germany. And we rarely have enough snow anymore to build them, maybe two or three winters in a decade.

@dangillmor Capitalism is pure evil. And the biggest propaganda success ever was to convince a huge chunk of the global population that the modern Western type of democracy with political parties and elections ever few years was the only path to freedom, and that you cannot have democracy without capitalism. Now before anybody accuses me of being a "commie", I think that the type of socialism run by one-party states is absolutely horrible. We need something entirely different. We need some kind of global revolution that cannot be taken over by a revolutionary elite who afterwards install themselves as dictators, even if they rule "for all the humans on the planet". We need the kind of revolution that creates cooperative networks of equals without hierarchies. That being said, I think that we can't stop Google from doing horrible things. It's a capitalist company, nobody should ever trust any of those. Besides, smartphones, tablets, all kinds of mobile computing devices, have never been "open", except for those made by a few fringe producers; they have been cryptographically locked down since the beginning, unlike personal computers. But then again, a quarter of a century ago a consortium of digital industry leaders decided to kill personal computing, and they have come quite a long way by now; it all began with "trusted computing" and the TPM chip, which by now sits inside almost every personal computer. With "secure boot", a few vendors can decide which operating systems a machine can and cannot run. And now other parts of the computer industry are killing personal computers by buying up all the hardware for their AI data centres. Having a computer completely under the control of its user, allowing it to run any software whatsoever, that's something which the people in power have always seen as an error that needed to be patched. Putting the TPM chip into PCs was a manoeuvre to shift the PC into the same direction as gaming consoles and mobile phones. Google allowing Android users to install software outside of Google's control was always just about having a competitive edge against Apple, who never allowed iOS users to do that. Now that Android is pretty much an established platform that isn't going away, they can do away with that and close up their system just like Apple's.
