@Flick @HebrideanHecate Well that's kind of what I meant, I suppose I should've said management. That is just weird to me. Clearly something in the managing culture has changed, since U.K. used to be very capable of organising and producing things. Is this some kind of side result of the privatise everything- push, where the state lost all its competent staff to private industry as well as a good deal of its bargaining power? And at the same time you have the austerity trolls running around saying spending needs to be cut, right?

Someone made a handy-dandy little graph about the number of missiles Iran has launched during this war. The conclusions should be rather obvious.A) this is not an escalating conflict. It may have geographically expanded, but it's not escalating. B) this is not a country that's capable of keeping up a war. I'm even more doubtful of the "WW3" predictions, as there are still no signs of anyone coming to Iran's aid. Iran is clearly having to go at it alone, and it's response has dropped off the proverbial cliff. There are now reports of Iran having fired two long distance missiles at the Chagos islands, and apparently that means they now have (or had) intercontinental missiles.In other words, the regime already had its hands on missiles capable of reaching Europe, all the way to the southeast of the UK and the west coast of Norway.A lot of people have been claiming that Iran was never a real threat, but frankly, I would personally be rather uncomfortable with that particular regime with its apocalyptic visions of the end times having missiles capable of reaching Europe. It's one thing for an expansionistic major power to have them, a whole different one for a religiously fanatic regime that is looking forward to the end times, to have such capacity. Also, the IRGC is now claiming they have nukes, as they've "issued orders" to ready them for operations. I'm in the "press X for doubt" camp myself. Especially since meanwhile, their state TV had someone on saying Iran has now entered a new era and become a global superpower (ahem... see graph below) and they must do what the public is demanding of them, that is to build a nuclear weapon. Consistency isn't their strong suit.Of course if it turns out they do have a nuclear weapon nearly ready or even hidden somewhere, that will rather prove Israel's and U.S.'s point.

Apropos of absolutely nothing. 112 is a shit emergency number.We used to have 000. That was much better.But then something something foreigners something and we had to change it to 112. I'm still not sure I'd remember 112 in a real emergency, and wouldn't in fact attempt to dial 000. One-hundred-and-twelve, how does that make sense as an emergency number?

@lxo @light @quasi @taylan encompasses an injurious attitude of dehumanization, of disrespect, that is violence. it's the attitude, not the argument. Pardon me for inserting myself here, but are you arguing that words aren't violence, but attitudes, i.e. thoughts, are? Because frankly, that would be even more absurd. As for the "other kinds of harms and injuries" being "even more hurtful and damaging", I'm going to do as the Aussies and go yeah, nah. To a great extent because I've never managed to kill anyone or put them into hospital by saying bad things, or having injurious or disrespecting attitudes towards them. And that's not for the lack of trying.

Attitudes are not the same thing as words, and neither attitudes nor words are the same as actions. And the two former ones do not automatically lead to the latter, or even reliably so. And even if A did lead to B, which led to C, that would still not mean that A=C. Words mean things and separation of concepts is important. Suggesting that because some thoughts might be aired as words, and someone might take damaging action based on those words, it follows that the thoughts themselves "are violence" or "constitute violence", damages that separation.

@HebrideanHecate the right to ‘private and family life’. Question. Why does this mean the right to this particular private and family life, rather than right to it in general? It seems to me one could well argue that the same principle is not applied evenly, seeing as the convention allows the prohibition of incest by law. So clearly, the protection does not necessarily apply to any specific form of "family life". Also, articles 9 and 10 (conscience and religion, and expression, respectively) allow for restrictions, so clearly any particular belief or expression doesn't automatically fall under the protection of the articles. This man would not be prevented from having a family life if he had to stay in the U.S. He could either have his family join him there, or he could divorce his wife and start another family* (personally, I side-eye his wife if she's willing to be reunited with him, given his conviction and them having a child). Not being allowed in the U.K. doesn't prevent him from taking either option, thus it doesn't prevent him from having a "private and family life". *Whether him starting another family would be desirable is irrelevant to the point I'm attempting to make here. My personal opinion is that it is very much not desirable.

Speaking of that video on U.S. illiteracy.The video contains clips filmed on the streets, where a dude with a microphone asks people he meets to "read the index card", and the card contains a short sentence with multi-syllable words. I just realised the people who struggle reading are doing exactly what that alternate reading teaching method (anyone remember its name?) taught kids.They're looking at the start of the word, its general length, and the words around it and essentially guessing what the word in question is. Sometimes they guess an existing word, sometimes they make up a nonsense word. Charcuterie -> Character(er)Delicacies -> Delicious / DelicatesDazzled -> ClazzledWore -> WereSilhouette -> StilettoSustain -> SubstainWidespread -> Wild screenAdmiration -> AdministrationPremonition -> PromotionCataclysmic -> Cataslatic Even when they start trying to actually read the word, they guess the end.Meticulously -> Meta solutionDeteriorated -> Deterieted One even gave up half way through the word "deficiencies". She started saying the word right, but then failed to follow through, instead saying "define..sieie..ess". It's so obvious, that they're doing precisely what they were taught to do and once you see it you can't unsee it. It's clear this isn't just the result of living glued onto devices. They are specifically attempting to read using the strategies that one technique thought were the key to teaching kids to read. And they are very clear examples of how that technique Does Not Work.

@benis_redux @flick If your house is permanently filled with people utterly incompetent in this respect, stainless steel might be a decent option. It won't rust or scratch, and a thick enough bottom won't buckle over time either.If they burn food till it sticks to the pan, well in that case they get the pleasure of scrubbing it off as well. And then get a lockable cabinet, put everything else in there and keep the key on your person at all times.
