Today we launched https://code.overheid.nl: the NL government-wide code platform 🥳🥳Code.overheid.nl is a pilot in which we are going to test @forgejo; an open source and sovereign alternative to GitHub/GitLab.This is an initiative of @BZKopensource, in collaboration with our friends from team DAWO (SSC-ICT), @opensource , @developer , and a number of participating government orgs. 🤝@tomootes from developer.overheid wrote a nice piece about it: https://developer.overheid.nl/blog/2026/04/24/we-gaan-samen-code-overheid-bouwen@bo @johan @marlenabcn

So the 👑 brother of the literal King 👑 of #TheNetherlands responded under the government's official Linkedin post about the launch of the national codeplatform, directly under my comment, asking "What's wrong with Gitlab? Dutch founder. Open source."......and Linkedin is not allowing me to post a (generic informative and very respectful) response about our choice for Forgejo over Gitlab?? Thanks Microsoft. 😐

This was going to be my response (translated directly from Dutch) btw:"Forgejo was deliberately chosen based on digital sovereignty considerations; it is an open-source, European, community-based solution. The American GitLab is more open core due to its enterprise licensing. What makes Forgejo particularly interesting is its active development on federation. This could lead to the creation of a European network of code platforms in the future." 1/2

I'm honoured to have been elected to the Board of Directors of @fdroidorg , the most well-known #opensource alternative to Google's Play Store. :fdroid: Imagine Microsoft deciding from now on what you can install on your laptop. No internet, you can only download things through the MS app store. Apps that MS has approved. Who wouldn't find that suffocating? In August 2025, Google announced: from September 2026, every Android app developer must register centrally with Google before their software can be installed on standard Android phones. This applies not only to apps from the Play Store, but to all apps. Including apps shared through F-Droid and apps made by hobbyists for personal use. Independent developers (and there are quite a few!) will be locked out of publishing their software on Android. :android: 2/4

Registration requires:- Paying a fee to Google- Agreeing to Google's terms and conditions- Providing a valid proof of identity- Providing proof of a personal signing key- Registering all current and future application IDsF-Droid is an important link in the open Android ecosystem; an app store without Google's terms, without registration, and without costs. And extra secure, because the F-Droid team checks, rebuilds and signs all apps themselves from the source code.3/4
