I deactivated Google Play on my phone. The electricity company app was the first to be bricked. 'You must update.' I wrote to them: ’I don’t have Google or Apple. Where else can I update the app?’ Nowhere else, they replied. I wrote (politely) back: ’I can’t use your app any more then. It’s an odd requirement to make of your customers. A Norlys customer can only access all Norlys services if they are also a customer of one of two specific private for-profit US companies.’#DanmarkSkifter

I mentioned that there is a growing grassroots movement in Denmark to boycott the US and to switch away from BigTech. And that it therefore seems like an outdated strategy for them to say: 'If they want to use all our services, the Danish customers of our company here in Denmark must also be a customer of Google or Apple in the USA.' To my pleasant surprise, I got a nice and considered response. Paraphrased: They appreciated my feedback as a customer and user of their digital solutions. And they have passed my point about ’a growing focus on alternatives to profit-driven IT solutions’ further up the line internally so that the right department is aware of the trend and requests like mine from customers.Fair play to Norlys for not just sending a standard or dismissive response.#DanmarkSkifter

I don’t think I would have got that response if I hadn’t been able to link to the DanmarkSkifter campaign site. That showed there really is a grassroots movement and that people are actually making the switch away from BigTech. Tak and thank you to everyone at #DanmarkSkifter for giving us a way to talk about the need for change and the tools to actually make the changes.I don't know if other countries have an equivalent to the 'Denmark Switches' campaign. I hope so. It's a great initiative.

While making the final preparations before cancelling my Microsoft subscription in time for Denmark's Big Switch From Big Tech Day (March 20th), I discovered I still have a Dropbox account. If I'd forgotten I had it, then I was just digitally hoarding and don't need it. So this was an easy one to walk away from. Took me less than 20 minutes to delete the files and delete the account. So easy that I should be embarrassed to name it as A Goal and boast about it, but I'm not.#DanmarkSkifter

From their OneDrive to my one drive#DanmarkSkifterGetting my photos off OneDrive was the last & longest thing I needed to do before shutting down Microsoft. It turned out to be an enjoyable process. I cleansed my digital hoard. I curated & kept what mattered. Now my photos are on my laptop, in my house, backed up on an external drive. I'd forgotten how streamlined & speedy it is to work locally, not in the cloud. Yet again, the process of disenshittification turned out to be enhancification.

'But did you *delete* your Twitter account?' ’You said you switched to Proton mail too, oh that’s bad, once someone at Proton said something’It’s nice to see new neighbours move into the Fediverse. It feels unwelcoming to see people immediately interview them about the purity of their intentions. Or telling them You’re Doing It Wrong. They've just arrived on a journey away from Big Tech. Maybe they'd prefer to be offered a seat and a cup of tea.

People keep sharing an image of a bird with a drop of water bursting on its head like a crown. It's AI, but people share it in good faith, believing it’s an amazing photo by a human of a real bird in a real moment of time. Meanwhile, humans who have taken amazing photos of real birds captured in real moments of time, like a hummingbird in ballet with a butterfly, get questioned in good faith by people who are tired of being cheated by AI-deceit. The way AI has broken social trust is distressing.

It's not, of course, generative AI that's deceiving people. It's the humans using AI to generate fake images and the humans who pass the fake images off as their own photos who are deceiving other humans.

A few people have questioned whether I am right to say that the image of a drop of water bursting on a bird's head like a crown actually is AI-generated. They think I may be wrong. That it is not faked. That it is real.If I'm wrong, if it really is an unmanipulated photo by a verified human photographer, please do let me know so that I can correct myself and my toot. (All this uncertainty is part of the whole problem. We all spend so much human time & energy trying to act in good faith.)
