Quick message to all fediverse newcomers:Moderation in the fediverse is done by humans. There are no bots that shadowban you based on detecting certain keywords. This has some important consequences:1) If you see a rule-breaking post, click the "report" button and write a report. The actual living, breathing creatures who run your instance will review the report.The location of the report button varies depending on your client/app software: it's usually near "reply" or "boost."2) The text you write in a report matters, because it will be read by an actual person. The mods are not just counting the number of reports.3) If you're talking about a sensitive topic like suicide, you should not bleep it out like "sui-de". You won't be banned for typing the actual word out. You should instead use a content warning for your post to warn your readers. Some users who don't wish to see certain topics can voluntarily apply word filters to their own timelines, and bleeping words is rude because it bypasses their filters.#FediTips

Some advice for fediverse newcomers, particularly those coming here from corporate social media:1) Follow and boost! Following is how you find posts you like, and boosting is how you let others find posts you like.2) Alt text! Many fediverse users are blind. They cannot see images. Hence, if you make a post with an an image, it's good to include a text description of the image. This can be an "alt text," which screenreaders can read instead of the image, or it can just be text under the image. Some people are unwilling to boost posts that contain description-free images.3) Content warnings! When you make a post about a heavy topic, you can choose to "hide" it behind a warning which mentions the kind of content. Anyone who sees the post can decide if they are in the right headspace to open it. For example, if you are going to talk about what a transphobic politician is doing, you can use the content warning transphobia, politics. Some users will only boost posts with heavy topics if they have content warnings, so using a CW can expand the reach your posts have. If you're talking about a heavy topic, you should not try to hide it with "algo-speak." For example, if you're talking about suicide, do not say "su*cide* or "unalive myself:" type out the actual word you mean, and use a CW.This also means if you see a post with a warning like "transphobia," it does not mean it's actually a transphobic post: it's likely made by a trans person critiquing transphobia. If you see actual transphobia, you should report it immediately. Speaking of which....4) Reports! All moderation on the fediverse is done by actual living, breathing people! There's no AI scanning all your posts to decide who to ban or whose posts to hide. If you see a post containing bigotry or spam, press the report button (usually located near the reply or boost buttons) and write a report: the real people who run your instance will read the report and respond! I talk more about reports in the quoted post.Also, if you receive a DM claiming to be a mod bot which tells you your account has been automatically disabled, it is a scam, and you should report it.5) Money: Your instance is run by a single person or small group of people doing it for fun, in their free time, at their own expense. There is no company running your instance. There are no investors. There is no premium memership. There are no ads. You should keep in mind that the people running your instance are doing it for fun, and not to extract profits from you.Your instance admins might accept donations, or they might not (it's their choice). If they do, and you can afford it, then it's good to donate to support your instance, but you will not unlock any additional features by donating. But their package repository is a lot smaller than other distros, so I'm not sure I'd want to use it without flatpak.I am now more seriously considering switching to @VoidLinux@chaos.social . I wanted a stable base system with frequently updated applications, but if that's not an option I'd settle for a rolling distro that tries to be somewhat stable.

I feel like I should quote-post my correction (already edited into the original but edits are weird:I incorrectly believed that a certain user was a maintainer of flatpak. The user in question has made a grand total of zero commits to the flatpak Github repository. In the quoted post (which gained significant traction and let to more arguing on other threads), I made several assertions based on the incorrect belief that he represented the flatpak project. Several years ago I coined the phrase "shadow prisons." I don't think I have a clear explanation on fedi of what the term means (I may have had one on my old account). I still occasionally use the term in my fedipostings, so I think I'll make one defining it now.The term "shadow prison" is inspired by the term "shadow bank." From Wikipedia,The shadow banking system is a term for the collection of non-bank financial intermediaries (NBFIs) that legally provide services similar to traditional commercial banks but outside normal banking regulations. Rephrased somewhat, a shadow bank is an organization which fulfills the de facto role of a bank, but insists that it is not a bank. By claiming to not be a bank, it is exempt from some of the regulations that banks are supposed to follow.After a stay in a so-called "psychiatric hospital" a decade ago, I started referring to it as a shadow prison. A shadow prison is an institution which performs the function of a prison, but claims it isn't a prison, and which is legally exempt from some of the regulations that prisons are supposed to follow.In the U.S., there are many rules prisons are allegedly supposed to follow, laid out by the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th Constitutional Amendments, and clarified by the Supreme Court. Among other things, to end up in prison:* The state must believe you have already committed something they defined as a crime. It is not sufficient for them to believe you might commit a crime in the future.* You have the right to an attorney.* You have right to remain silent.* You have a right to be informed of your right to remain silent.* You have a right to a jury.* The state must demonstrate your guilt "beyond reasonable doubt," which is a stricter standard of evidence than they use in civil cases.Prisons don't always follow the rules they are "supposed to." But even when they do, prisons are still horrific abuses of human rights. The 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th Amendments aren't ideals to strive for: they are the absolute lowest of the low standards.Which is why it's extra concerning that psychiatric "hospitals," despite being prisons in all but name, don't even have to follow such minimal standards.The laws regulating psychiatric shadow prisons are civil law, which means there's no right to an attorney, no right to remain silent, no right to a jury, and no requirement that you've even done anything that the state doesn't like.
