One thing is, it takes a really long time to
build a live-build image for a different
architecture than the build system. I guess cuz
my amd64 has to emulate an arm64? It's crazy
slow. Hopefully the output works. (My first build
failed due to slightly wrong command line
input... I'm on my second now, pray for mojo)

I'm pretty sure the arm64 build of my live-build
project is gonna work first try. The people that
made live-build are so incredibly talented. I
think what I made with it is pretty cool but I'm
really standing on the shoulders of giants here.

they're all the same:
1) Bad Music
2) Broccoli haircuts running up stairs
3) Crowbar the door to the roof open
4) Shots walking in the edge of a building or
crane or whatever where an errant gust of wind
means death.
Seriously I've seen this exact video like 10
times the last few months - social media sux.

I got some data nice and massaged today. I still
have an hour left of my day but I'm done. I'm
stopping and I'm gonna read some of Alton Brown's
book, then we are gonna walk to the bakery and
get nice bread so's we can have it when we host
A's cousins for dinner tomorrow. I wish everyone
a nice relaxing coast into the weekend.

Had to listen to a lot of AI nonsense today. I
was the only one in the chat to not have drunk
the kool-aid, so I just shut up. The writing's
starting to be on the wall for me. I've been
taking notes on some of the tech stuff I should
study and get skilled up on, and I've been
looking at the job postings I get in my email
with a new eye. I might start looking to jump
ship.

Figured out I was barking up the wrong tree
trying to replace my old iPod's hard drive with a
flash drive. Also, the hard drive started working
again, no idea why, so I bought 70$ worth of
hardware for nuthin' - oh well, having spare
parts around isn't so bad.
Learning that I wasn't as clever as I thought I
was was pretty interesting though, because I got
to read this:

And, when I'm ready to spend another 70$ / when
the hard drive really does die, I now know

My uncle died. We weren't very close, but back
when I was applying to high schools, he wrote a
letter trying to get the school I wanted to go
to, that rejected me, to reverse their decision.
He was a well-regarded educator, and he tried to
leverage his clout on my behalf. I only found out
that this happened years later. He was a
hardworking activist and organizer. He made a
difference in his community, especially to the
youth. He was a devoted husband and a stern but
loving father to my cousin. He always treated me
like he held me in high regard, though honestly
he treated most everyone that way. I will
remember him as a good man.

ok, ok, I've almost got it. I'm so close. I have
no idea why but suddenly the dockhand container
is being launched both by the wrapper systemd
service I created for it and docker itself, so we
tell docker not to start it itself anymore, that
*should* do it! Maybe it was always doing this
and it somehow race condition/RNGd itself into
working most of the time. Anyway, this should fix
it. Here I go, makin ISOs again.

Oh hell yeah, updating live-build itself solved
my problem! For some reason the kernel image and
headers I was using stopped resolving, but I went
down one kernel version and everything still
works thank goodness. I was afraid I would be
fighting this thing the rest of the week!

I put password guesses into my boss' old
blackberry until it wiped itself. I can't get any
of the blackberry software to talk to it,
although I did manage to get drivers installed
for it and its serial ports appearing. Oh well!
Guess it'll go into the 'ol electronics recycling
box. It's a neat little thing to play with for 2
minutes but I'm not gonna put anymore effort into
it.

Adjust a config, build a new iso, dd the iso to
usb, boot the target machine from the usb, go
through the installer, see if the problem's
fixed. It's not? Repeat as necessary.
This task is taking a long time. I'm really close
though! (I hope)

Ok, I found an old industrial flash card that
speaks the same UDMA as the iPod (32gb! hopefully
the ipod's okay with that) and I bought a 1.8"
IDE to CF adapter off amazon. Spent about 70$
total - to resurrect a VERY obsolete music
player. If everything goes well maybe I'll even
buy a new battery for it. Not sure what I'll do
after that. Use it to test headphones and
speakers I guess! :D
The battery still holds a charge, though I don't
know for how long since I haven't really been
using it. It should last longer on a charge with
solid state innards. It'll be interesting to
test.

Ongoing projects:
- Making the Palm Tungsten integrated enough into
my infra that it can be an everyday carry. It
checks my email, syncs with my Google calendar,
and I can manage it through Palm desktop running
on a Windows 7 VM on my server. I just need to
write some web scraping software for some of my
more commonly consulted information sources. The
browser isn't exactly modern web friendly.
- My firewire iPod drive died so I disassembled
it tonight (to see if I could without wrecking
it... success!) and I'm rolling myself a J to
celebrate the successful unshelling and
researching if replacing the drive with a
compactflash card is the right move.
- (for work) Creating a custom debian installer
for use on these video-less APU boxes that'll
turn them into wifi environment sensors. The
software has to self-configure and start talking
to our cloud infra, and since they don't have
video you need to be able to do the install over
the serial port. Baseline functionality was
completed today!
- Found that blackberry in my junk drawer. It
belonged to a former boss who gave it to me (he
also gave me a Treo! but I'm gonna dispose of it
because somehow the screen got cracked and the
rubber coating turned to sticky glue... did the
companies that coated their stuff with that crap
know that was gonna happen? As a retro
electronics enthusiast that stuff is the bane of
my existence) anyway it's password locked but I'm
gonna see if I can get into it, maybe make it run
some interesting software
You might also see the little video capture box
and the condensor mic. That's for when I clean up
the bench enough to livestream working on one of
these projects or one of the many other ones that
don't have bits and pieces in this photo. It'll
probably be shouting into the void like most of
my posting here but whatever. This stuff makes me
happy, and so does, every now and then, writing
or talking about it, whether anyone's listening
or not. 😎

I'm almost done this live-boot project - or
anyway getting it to the point where it can
reproduce the system I built by hand.
Once that's done, we're back to actually
extending its feature set. It's a bit limiting
working with only 16gb of space but we can
probably do better than that if these things go
to production as actual appliances.
It's been fun learning how this tool works and
using it to produce something that actually does
stuff. I feel like I have a new power now -
building customized linux distributions!
Also it's made me think about how I can reproduce
my server if it dies. My first plan was just
compress the nearly terabyte-sized root
filesystem and drop it onto an external drive,
maybe ultimately an offsite backup, but I feel
there's got to be a better way...

Ok, got the driver WORKING in the VM I'm
installing on, but it doesn't work on first boot,
so, working on that. Hopefully once I've got this
all clean it'll work the same on real hardware...

I *think* I have my custom debian installer doing
everything it needs to now. If it works, it'll
just need a bit more tweaking to install on
headless machines and my assignment'll be
fulfilled, the biggest, dumbest part of it
anyway.

Drivers are such a pain in the ass in Linux. It
either works perfectly out of the box or it's a
nightmare, no in-between.
