Same on the masterpieces of infocom CD. Everything is even on there
twice (once in /pc/<game>/data and once in a directiory full of only
..dat files). Not sure whether it is an acident or not. I do know that
most people apparently choose an alternative z machine (I use xzip).

I guess you do then and they should have included everything you need
(the materpieces of infocom CD has everyhting in PDF format). If this
was not supplied it was probably a mistake...

You might need the packaging, I do not remember if it had any vital
information or not. If you just want an infotater animal then the
encyclopedia knows the answer. The animal varies (there 12 possible
animals). The later games genuinely require the packaging (Enchanter
included).
