The tricky bit was to figure out that the wires do this whether or not
they are plugged into the sockets. The red, green, and blue wires run to
the white boxes of Jarboe, the Master, and Bungay, respectively, and
from there into their phones. The sockets are the connections to the phone
company.

So what you do by plugging the red and blue wires into the green socket
is to connect both Jarboe and Bungay's phones to the socket of the
Master's phone number (the only one you know - 212). Then you plug
the green wires into either of the other sockets, making the phone co.
think that the Master's phone is either Jarboe's or Bungay's. Then
you call the Master's number, which rings both J & B's phones, they
talk, and you listen in.

Fairly straightforward once you work it out, but it took quite a while
and a lot of experimentation to figure out what was going on.
