While I'm mostly on the "don't compress it" side in this particular
issue, unless *everyone* that wants to use it can uncompress it, you can 
decompress ZIP files on 8 bit Apple IIs..  There is at least one program
called Angel that will let you get files out of ZIP archives...  I think
there's another too..  Neither is perfect, but it's mostly cosmetic bugs I
can remember when playing around with them a bit.

GSes (16 bit Apple IIs, as a very brief generalization) have more options
wrt. ZIP files.

(.Z compression would be good as those who can't decompres the file(s) on their
system can just "get" the file in FTP without the .Z extension and it's 
automagically decompressed on the fly.)
