Infocom wrote its games in ZIL ("Zork Implementation Language"?) which is 
based on MDL ("Muddle") which is a Lisp derivative.  I can't imagine what 
it must have been like for them.   I have seen some fragments in some 
issues of The Status Line that are archived at gmd or the Infocom home 
page at uwo.ca.

It didn't look pretty.
