There is a memorial to her great-grandson Rev. Hatch Dent. It says, “Rev. Hatch Dent, son of Hatch and Grandson of John Dent b. 1615

of Yorkshire, England, one of the early settlers of the Province of Maryland.” Rev. Hatch Dent was actually the great-grandson d. 1650

but the history is stated. The inscription is /or was at the Dent Memorial chapel in St. Mary’s County, Maryland at Charlotte Hall m. John Hatch

John Dent became one of the leading planters in Maryland. On November 9, 1673, he patented “Promise” for 140 acres

and the next year he patented “Barnaby” of 60 acres. Barnaby was in Chaptico Hundred of St. Mary’s County and became his dwelling-plantation. Before his death he came the proprietor through purchase and inheritance of an estate exceeding 3000 acres.

He was a leader in the community. He served as Commissioner and JP for St. Mary’s County in 1679-80 and 1684-85. In

1683, he was commissioned to lay out the towns in St. Mary’s County .He was captain of a Chaptico Hundred company Calvary

“John Hatch, an interesting character in early Maryland history.” This and some of the following material are from Charles County in 1689. In 1693 he was assigned to regulate military affairs in Chaptico. He became one of the first vestrymen of the Chaptico Gentry by Harry Wright Newman. John Hatch was born 1614. He was probably born in England. His parents are unknown. He was parish. On November 24, 1698 the All Faith’s Parish purchased 50 acres from Captain John Dent. page 511, show that in 1647 Mrs. Hatch, wife of John was transported to Maryland. One website stated that she was Anne Spinke He inherited the lands of his UncleThomas Dent, circa 1630 of Guisborough, Yorkshire, England.

John Dent was one of the earliest settlers of the Province of Maryland in Coolsprings, Charles 1653. He was one who served on the governing body of the Province of Maryland from 1654 to 1658. He was well estblished as a planter by Sept. 1666, when he entered his cattle marks at court in Charles Ct MD 1664 - 1990 by Regina Combs Hammett tells the story of an attempt to raise a meeting in Charles County in 1660 for the County. His early days in the Province were spent in Charles County near his kinsmen, but he eventually resided in the purpose to discredit Lord Baltimore. John Hatch and Thomas Gerald were fined for this action. Hammett includes as part of John northern portion of St. Marys County near Charlotte Hall. As early as 1681, he was involved with Josias Fendall, former Hatch’s career a stint as Sheriff in 1678. It is not known when he died but it was after 1678 and before Oct. 1682.
