Seven pivotal players did extraordinary things to create the United States: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and John Jay.

Some signed the Declaration of Independence, pledging their “lives, fortunes and sacred honor” to the project of forging a new nation. Others fought in the Revolutionary War. Later, they reconvened to write and ratify the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, creating the U.S. national government that Washington, Adams, Jefferson and Madison would lead as the first four presidents.

On America’s 250th anniversary, take this quiz to test your knowledge of the seven people who did so much to make America what it is today.
