Morikami Museum & Human League [1] ['Chitown Kev', 'David Michigan', 'Belinda Ridgewood', 'Bill In Portland Maine', 'Thom Hartmann'] Date: 2026-10-13 I confess. This is partially a repeat, from about a year ago actually. I’m running late and am drawing a blank. And thought, what the heck it’s likely new to the MOTley crew and even geographically appropriate – we are back in southern Florida till the holidays. But First: Welcome to Morning Open Thread, with daily posts from a MOTley crew of hosts who choose their own topics from a wide-open range: often music or poetry, sometimes history — anything and everything from Apples to Zoology! We support our community, invite and share ideas, and encourage thoughtful, respectful dialogue in our open forum. That’s a feature, not a bug. Other than that, site rulz rule. The Motley Schedule Sunday: Ice Blue Monday: officebss Tuesday: RandomNeuron Wednesday: youffraita Thursday:eeff Friday: DHM Saturday: RandomNeuron Hey. We need Hosts. You can write about anything or nothing. And opus or a paragraph. Just volunteer in the comments or drop a note to officebss. You know the drill: This an open thread and you’re welcome to stop to say hello, check in on the motley crew, join the motley crew (no secret handshake required ) and if inclined join in with the theme. Or not! We are easy like that. Lunch at the Morikami (Time machine ON: from a year ago) At the museum entrance Random Neuron One of countless sculpted trees Random Neuron In southern Florida there is a positively wonderful museum and garden : The Morikami. We have visited here many times over the years. Yesterday it was with dear friends who are members for lunch. Sorry, no Foodie pics. A stupa Random Neuron The gardens are …sublime. Peaceful. It is Florida, so it’s hot, although yesterday was quite enjoyable. We walked about half the circuit. My fellow walker is 84 and a spry, sharp, wonderful individual. He was more then game to do the full circuit but our wives had elected to enjoy the museum and we didn’t want to leave them waiting There are water features and bridges. Meticulously maintained paths. The shrubs and trees are carefully pruned and trained using traditional techniques, tying branches with twine and bamboo to train the desired shape. The bridge- symbolic of the museums mission and one of several focal points for the garden. Random Neuron The museum gallery is between exhibitions but the gallery space did have two smaller exhibits- one, a fun history of the naming of the Chinese years which I did not take pictures of — although I learned I am a rat :-). And a second exhibit which I did snap a few images of. Pouring vessel ca. 18th century, mid-Edo period Porcelain with underglaze blue cobalt Gift from the Estate of Paul W. Oaky (the lead singer above) had to recruit musicians and a vocalist… Oakey initially intended to hire a female backing vocalist to cover Ware’s high-pitched backing vocals. In a frequently repeated anecdote, Oakey and his then girlfriend went into Sheffield city centre one Wednesday night and visited various venues with the hope of finding a female singer to join the band. They eventually came to the Crazy Daisy Nightclub on High Street, where Oakey spotted two girls dancing together on the dance floor, Joanne Catherall and Susan Ann Sulley. They were both 17-year-old students on a night out and neither had any experience singing or dancing professionally. With no preamble, Oakey asked both girls to join the tour as dancers and incidental vocalists.[18] Oakey has stated that upon discovering the girls were only teenagers and also best friends, he invited them both so they could look after each other on the tour. He has also said that he thought having two women as vocalists and dancers would also add glamour to the band. Because of the girls’ ages, Oakey and Wright later had to visit Catherall and Sulley’s respective parents to obtain permission for the girls to go on the tour. Their parents let them join the band under the provision that Oakey would keep them safe. And as it turns out that trio are the only three consistent members of the band. The theme? Synth pop/ electronic music. be good everyone – i’m off for a walk shortly. in my absence fell free to dance!Community PostElement [END] --- [1] Url: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2026/10/13/800111549/community/morning-open-thread-tuesday-october-12-a-throwback-morikami-museum-human-league/ Published and (C) by Daily Kos Content appears here under this condition or license: Site content may be used for any purpose without permission unless otherwise specified. via Magical.Fish Gopher News Feeds: gopher://magical.fish/1/feeds/news/dailykos/
