Kitchen Table Kibitzing 10/13/2026: Instruments [1] ['Belinda Ridgewood', 'David Michigan', 'Thom Hartmann'] Date: 2026-10-13 Good evening, Kibitzers! Sometimes, I just get an idea in the middle of the night. This was one of those: songs with musical instruments in the title. I am certain you’ll have songs you want to add in the comments! Billy Joel: Piano Man (British TV show The Old Grey Whistle Test, May 1975). ❧ [5:46] I liked this cover of the Who song, but also, honorable mention to this Weird Al Yankovic performance for his intro. Sheryl Crow: Squeeze Box (London, 1997). ❧ [2:52] The Byrds and Bob Dylan: Mr. Tambourine Man (Roy Orbison tribute concert, February 1990). ❧ [5:36] Bruce Hornsby and the Range: Mandolin Rain (The Ritz, New York, February 1987). ❧ [7:04] Okay, not even halfway through here and I’m breaking my own “rule”. This is a traditional Sicilian-language song whose title, Eh, Cumpari, means roughly “Hey, buddy”, so obviously there are no instruments in there. But since the whole thing is about instruments, I felt like it belonged in here. Translated lyrics are in that link on the title, but they are also not hard to get the idea of. Julius La Rosa: Eh, Cumpari! (1953 recording). ❧ [2:24] Joni Mitchell: The Fiddle and the Drum (The Dick Cavett Show, August 1969, the famous “Day After Woodstock” episode – full episode here). ❧ [2:37] George Harrison & Ringo Starr: While My Guitar Gently Weeps (The Prince’s Trust Rock Gala, Wembley Arena, June 1987, with all-star band including ‪Elton John‬, ‪Jools Holland‬, ‪Eric Clapton‬, ‪Phil Collins‬, Mark King, and Jeff Lynne, among others.) ❧ [5:44] Todd Rundgren: Bang the Drum All Day (official video, 1982). ❧ [3:25] T. Rex: Bang A Gong (British TV show Top of the Pops, 1971). ❧ [4:17] The Andrews Sisters: Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (film Buck Privates, 1941). ❧ [2:17] Donovan: Hurdy Gurdy Man (French TV show Pop 2, 1970). ❧ [3:16] This is a legendary barbershop performance: the Ambassadors of Harmony, under the direction of Jim Henry, win the 2009 BHS (then SPEBSQSA) international chorus contest singing this a cappella arrangement by David Wright. Ambassadors of Harmony: Seventy-Six Trombones (Barbershop Harmony Society International Convention, Anaheim, 2009). ❧ [4:57] Only one thing could supplant Dr. Jim Henry as the finale of something like this, and that is the 25-minute live Tubular Bells from the BBC in the 70s. Mike Oldfield: Tubular Bells Part 1 (BBC TV show 2nd House, November 1973. Full ensemble credits on YouTube page.) ❧ [25:48] Since yesterday it was my birthday, I have one more thing to add. Paul Simon: Have a Good Time (recording from 1975 album Still Crazy After All These Years.) ❧ [3:36] Tuesday: Oh, wait a minute! Today we have new tracks from TWO of our favorites, so we need to include them. The Marsh Family: It Ain’t Kyiv, Babe (Bob Dylan original). ❧ [3:33] Randy Rainbow: The RFK Jr. Lament (Original from Guys and Dolls). ❧ [5:39] [END] --- [1] Url: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2026/10/13/800110801/community/kitchen-table-kibitzing-10-13-2026-instruments/ Published and (C) by Daily Kos Content appears here under this condition or license: Site content may be used for any purpose without permission unless otherwise specified. via Magical.Fish Gopher News Feeds: gopher://magical.fish/1/feeds/news/dailykos/
