Potential Blue Wave Bonus: National Popular Vote Interstate Compact [1] ['Citizen Earth', 'Blue Choir Singer', 'Chloris Creator'] Date: 2026-10-11 One of the big reforms to our democratic process that we Progressives have been longing for is the elimination of the Electoral College. Without the EC, George W. Bush loses to Al Gore in 2000, and maybe we avoid the 20 Years War in Iraq. Donald Trump loses to Hillary Clinton in 2016, and we avoid everything plaguing the U.S. today. The Supreme Court likely stays an impartial arbiter of legal “balls and strikes”, avoids the corruption that has infected several of its jurists, corporations aren’t considered persons, women retain autonomy over their bodies, voting rights are strong, the global climate benefits. The list of what could have been goes on and on. It’s a Wonderful Life. Back in 2006, an effort called the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact was launched to neuter the Electoral College. States that adopted the Compact pledged to assign their electoral votes to the presidential candidate who won the popular vote nationally, regardless of whether the majority of their state’s voters voted for the national popular vote winner. For states to adopt this, both legislative branches need to pass the Compact, and the governor needs to sign it into law. Simple, straightforward, effective, and will pass a judicial review of its constitutionality. To date, 18 states representing 222 Electoral Votes are part of the Compact: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia. However, 270 electoral votes are required for the Compact to take effect, so a few more states representing a collective total of 48 more Electoral Votes are needed. If the Blue Tsunami we are hoping for in 23 days materializes, the opportunity may finally be at hand to effectively allow the national popular vote to determine the winner of presidential elections. Below is but one path to this goal. 32 states have not adopted the Compact, including Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Maine. Pennsylvania has 19 electoral votes, a Democratic governor, and control of the Assembly. Adding 3 seats in the senate would give them the trifecta of controlling the executive and legislative branches, and a path to adopt the Compact. Michigan has 15 electoral votes, a Democrat leads in the race for governor, and polls suggest Democrats have a very good chance keeping the majority in the Senate and gaining a majority in the House. Pennsylvania (19) + Michigan (15) = 34. Wisconsin has 10 electoral votes. It’s a very close race for governor, but the Democrat, David Crowley, has a slight lead in polling. Analysts and forecasters lean toward Democrats winning control of the Senate, while the Assembly is a toss up. Pennsylvania (19) + Michigan (15) + Wisconsin (10) = 44. Maine has 4 electoral votes. The Democrat is favored to prevail in the race for governor, while Democrats are expected to retain control of the Assembly and Senate. Pennsylvania (19) + Michigan (15) + Wisconsin (10) + Maine = 48!!! Michigan and Maine have each previously passed the compact in at least one legislative chamber. Let’s hope the Blue Tsunami materializes and is of sufficient scale that these four state legislatures fall our way. If that happens – and it’s looking like it is within the realm of actual possibility, the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact may be in play, which would be the most delicious, overlooked, and unexpected icing on this Big Blue Cake.
