WHEN ACTIVISM WAS OPTIONAL [1] ['Chitown Kev', 'Ammo Hauler'] Date: 2026-10-10 by Pathos Romaniac There was a time, not in the age of Woodstock, not during the nuclear arms race, not when the nation was panicking about Desert Storm, not even in the long shadow after 9/11…but just last year when giving a damn wasn’t a survival skill. A time when you could drink your morning coffee without scanning the headlines like they were seismic readings. When vigilance didn’t feel like a full-time job. When the republic didn’t wake you up at 3 a.m. with that cold, metallic feeling in your gut. That world is gone. Activism used to be part of the democratic rhythm. It is something you stepped into because you believed in the civic dance. Not the emergency-room triage for a country bleeding out on its own floor. Now we wake up in fight-or-flight before we even reach for our glasses. We scroll the news the way people once checked the weather… trying to read the pressure changes, the storms forming offstage, the next shockwave rolling in. This isn’t civic participation. It’s disaster response. And the toll is real. It shows up in the fractures between friends. It shows up in families who no longer trust each other. It shows up in the media and institutions dissolving like paper left out in the rain. Not because we are dissolving, but because the system is. We’re the rainstorm: the tears, the sweat, the fear, the anger, the exhaustion. We’re the pressure they keep betting we won’t survive. Here’s the part nobody wants to say out loud: It is not “someone” who benefits. It’s not vague. It’s not mysterious. The billionaire ruling class profits from a population too overwhelmed to notice their freedoms being trimmed at the edges. The billionaire ruling class counts on you being too tired to push back. The billionaire ruling class engineered the system that feeds off your exhaustion. Exhaustion isn’t a side effect. It’s the strategy. So here’s the truth I’ll leave sitting on your table: Keep your voice. Keep your people close. Keep your eyes on independent media, because it’s the only place left not selling you someone else’s script. Why do we bother to keep showing up? Truthfully it’s not going to save the whole world, but it stops them from shrinking your whole world.
