Community Advisory Panel September Meeting ReCAP [1] ['Chitown Kev', 'Belinda Ridgewood', 'Major Kong', 'Bill In Portland Maine'] Date: 2026-10-06 Hi there Daily Kos Community! As promised, here’s your recap of the Community Advisory Panel’s September 30th meeting. Five of the seven Community Representatives on CAP were present (myself, Angela Marx, belinda ridgewood, Chitown Kev and G2geek; Besame and zenbassoon were unable to be there) along with Markos and five dKos staff members. As usual we covered a lot of ground in our meeting. Let’s recap some of what we discussed: We heard about a planned addition (NOT a Front-Page change!!) that will allow users to toggle to something that resembles the “Old Home Page” and have it stick. I know, I can hear some of you cheering wildly! I also can hear some folks saying “release it now, even if it still needs to be tweaked” and related to that, we also discussed being cautious about releasing any changes to the User Experience (ooh, brillig learned new jargon!) less than a month until Election Day as changes/additions can have unintended consequences. We discussed the new Front Page design that deployed on 9/24/26 and the impact that redesign has on the Top Community Stories aka Rec List and Community Spotlight sections. Staff are monitoring engagement data closely to determine whether small design tweaks may be necessary. I’ll update as that data becomes available to CAP. We talked again about what we know many of us (and most of the people in our meeting) miss: knowing who recced your comment, and the ability to use formatting in comments. And I hate hate hate being the bearer of bad news, but at this moment on this comment platform, those things are not possible. Yes, Viafoura has been told. No, we can’t ‘make them’. And yes, I hear you wondering “was this really the best option out there for a comment platform?” Yes, yes it was. By a large margin. The only thing that would make us all happy (including markos!) is a bespoke platform created for Daily Kos with all the features we want. Unfortunately, our Soros checks have not arrived nor do we have a rich elderly relative willing us the kind of funding necessary to build and maintain that Big Beautiful platform. HOWEVER: we have asked on behalf of the community what that magic funding number might be, and when we have that info I will share it, because we’re going to need to figure out how to pay for it. An issue irritating some users since the migration to DK6 is that when you save a draft diary for the first time, it creates a URL based on the title of your diary at that moment. It used to be that that URL was generated when your diary published, reflecting whatever your last title happened to be, if you’re like me and change either title or diary topic mid-process. We have confirmed that this is a WordPress thing and unfortunately, it cannot be changed. Other than my advice to choose wisely that first title before you save it (to avoid a slug like dailykos.com/2026/10/6/what-the-hell-should-I-call-this, for example), if your URL slug is really unhelpful, pasting your draft into a new diary is also an option. Also, be kind to authors whose diary URL is… not perfect. We’re all doing our best :). A second issue that’s cropped up in Top Comments and other places when folks try to link to a comment in the daily Liveblog is that a permanent link was not possible, and any attempt led to linking to the Liveblog main page. It turns out this is a known bug originating from the third-party Liveblog provider, Ticker. UNLIKE Viafoura, however, Ticker is FIXING THE BUG. Until that happens, the Share option for liveblog comments has been disabled to avoid frustration. Lastly, I want to raise something we touched on briefly- figuring out more ways to solicit suggestions and feedback on the site. This doesn’t mean the comments you make in CAP diaries, other diaries, send to any of us or deliver by any method you use AREN’T valuable. Literally half or more of each meeting time is CAP members saying “I saw someone [comment on something] and wanted to bring it here“. I keep a running list when I see things and I know others do as well, and we either get it onto our meeting agenda or share it immediately to our CAP Slack channel. But what we’re figuring out is how to request feedback on specific items (be they desired features, thoughts on an aspect of our user experience here, etc) in a way that will make responding easier. I suspect some surveys will be in all of our futures, but we’re just beginning so please keep reaching out to all of us with your thoughts, issues that we hopefully can fix, etc. As always, please reach out to me or to any member of the CAP team with concerns or feedback. We really do take our role as representatives of YOU the vibrant and engaged Daily Kos community seriously. Cheers and I’ll be back later this month in preparation for our October meeting!!
