Friday Night Beer Blog [1] ['Bill In Portland Maine', 'Thom Hartmann', 'News Corpse', 'Greg Dworkin'] Date: 2026-10-02 Happy Friday people! Come in and join us for your preferred adult beverage! I’m leading with not-beer tonight just because. I don’t think I’m going to turn into a hard seltzer fan, but I saw this at the Korean market and it’s pretty good. It’s malt based, 4.0% abv, and has a good strong lemon flavor. One of my favorite things about it is that they went to the expense of getting a unique can so they can insert a whole big slice of lemon. The lemon slice in the picture isn’t my addition, it came with the drink! esquimaux It’s also the first can I’ve seen that tells you to remove the label for recycling, which 3CM talked about in one of his FNBBs. esquimaux The Korean market also has South Korean beer, which I’ve tasted and reviewed here before. It was pretty average industrial lager, I’d rather drink Modelo. Music: Continuing our countdown of Barstool Mountain’s Top 100 Drinking Songs: #40 — Bloody Mary Morning – Willie Nelson This song is still typically part of Willie’s show, though without the long guitar solo. He’s already been on our list with Whiskey River, and will be back once more. A Rolling Stone writer called Willie one of the great masters of rubato, up with Sinatra, and Bloody Mary Morning is my favorite example. [per Google: “Rubato is a musical term meaning ‘robbed time’, where a performer slightly speeds up and slows down the tempo for emotional expression without changing the overall length of the passage.”] The band keeps putting down 1-2-3-4, and the singer is “yeah, someplace around there.” Any amateur can simply not be in time; it takes a great singer to do it on purpose, and be back on beat again exactly when they want to. Bay Area readers are invited to come hear me play at Fieldwork Brewing for the final weekend of Oktoberfest! Join us for oompah music and Festbier! Both performances are 2pm to 5pm. Saturday Oct 3: Fieldwork Mission Rock (SF) Sunday Oct 4: Fieldwork San Ramon A few weeks ago I reported that Fieldwork would be releasing a tribute to Giants announcer Mike Krukow, and last weekend I got to try “Grab Some Pine, Meat”. It’s a very tasty West Coast IPA, filtered, 6.5% abv, with the piney aroma hops you’d expect to match the name. I like it! They aren’t serving my old favorite “St Thomas OG” though; bringing in a steady rotation of new beers means the old ones may have to move on. My other favorite last year was the “Aloha Vibes” fruit sour slushie, that’s gone now too. Beer News: Managing the mix of old and new products at Sierra Nevada is the topic of this week’s Hop Take column at Vinepair. A problem — the problem? — for first-generation craft breweries is as follows. 1. Everybody knows your iconic beer. 2. Everybody loves your iconic beer. 3. Nobody buys your iconic beer. … The American drinking public likes the idea of these classic craft beers much more than it actually likes buying them. To tinker with them too much is to invite much nostalgic gnashing of teeth; to leave them entirely untinkered with, to embrace decline. It doesn’t sound like they’re changing the recipes of our old favorites, just “refresh the packaging”. New beers are a big focus. SN is trying to compete with the lower-production, constantly-innovating small craft breweries whose fans look down on SN as “grocery store craft”. The “West Ghost IPA” that I tried recently was the first move in that direction. There are also new non-beer projects. I’ve got beer tonight too, choice of a couple IPAs from Discretion. And I’ve got basketball! Go Valkyries! What are you drinking? Anyone brewing?
