Republican suggests more ‘hurtful methods’ in Tennessee execution [1] ['Walter Einenkel'] Date: 2026-10-01 People protest against the death penalty ahead of the scheduled execution of Christa Pike on Sept. 30 in Tennessee. Legal analyst John Yoo appeared on Fox News Thursday to try to explain how the botched execution of Christa Pike in Tennessee could have been avoided. Pike is currently being treated at a hospital after surviving two doses of lethal injection. And instead of dealing with the moral implications of state-sanctioned killings, Yoo said that the problem is that lethal injection is the “most humane method of capital punishment.” “The court has allowed—and Tennessee could use—far more, I would think, hurtful methods, like firing squad,” Yoo said. “What’s going to have to happen is that Tennessee is going to have to go back and try again, perfect these methods, or use some other kind of execution method.” Yoo’s ethically vacuous position is unsurprising given his role as one of the infamous legal architects that the Bush administration relied on to defend its inhumane detainment and torture program during its “war on terror.” Hours before Tennessee’s attempted execution, Pike’s legal team argued that hanging would be preferable to lethal injection because of her existing blood disorder. According to her lawyers, she is currently in critical condition.
