[1] ['Aashirs Nani', 'Rob In Vermont', 'News Corpse', 'Chitown Kev'] Date: 2026-10-01 Happy October. When I was a child and when my daughter was a child, October 1 was always a special day for me because it ushered in the festive months of the year. I’m already deep into nostalgia about Halloweens and wondering what are your favorite Halloween memories? When I reflect back on Halloween in the past I always recall the days when we would take my daughter trick or treating downtown Bolinas. There were a group of us that met every year near the hardware store on Wharf Road, six on the dot. It would still be light. There in the parking lot we would collectively handle costume malfunctions and gush over each other’s kids. There were perhaps 15 households that would go all out with decorations and treats. It was always chilly. Some of the parents came in costume. We never did. Sometimes we would drive over to Stinson Beach to continue trick or treating but for the most part the kids were content with the downtown festivities. I can remember how my daughter would sit at the kitchen table and sort through her candy. We always allowed her to eat whatever she wanted that night. She never did have much of a sweet tooth so her pumpkin full of goodies would go up on top of the fridge and she would forget about it in a day or two. *** Just a few more days left until we turn the clocks, signaling the end of my evening walks in the field with my dog. It’s been a special part of my day for months now as we often run into people we know and the dogs get some off leash time to run and socialize. Earlier in the day the field is mostly in use for kids sports so there is this window of opportunity that shuts after Saturday night. Not looking forward. As much as I love the late fall and early winter months, this year they come with the dread of the impending Super El Nino and the scare over the massive Kelvin wave which is scheduled to swallow coastal California. *** Have you found that people are discussing current events more often? I’ve been noticing lately that people are starting to talk more about conditions in political, climate, and technology arenas much more in casual conversations than previously. It feels as if we have reached some breaking point where more folks are finding they simply need to vent their disbelief and fears. This means that dogpark conversations, which were hardly ever complex or really meaningful, are becoming quite serious. I suppose it helps some to know that you are not alone in your concerns but there’s something very unnerving when you overhear people next to you at the gym discussing the kevlin wave or how sea water temperature is impacting the fish population. It’s hard to escape reality. *** So let’s gear up for October 31 with some Halloween goodies to get us in the ‘spirit’ of things. happy belated halloween, spooky art pals! — Loish (@loish.bsky.social) 2024-11-01T15:40:17.086Z The best scary movies to watch in October Netflix What’s your choice for the scariest movie you’ve ever seen?
