Kaepernick, whose NFL career was effectively ended in the wake of his protests against police violence, says he sees parallels between himself and Macklemore. “The part that I hope people appreciate and take away in this moment is what [the New England Patriots owner] Robert Kraft and what they’re saying by denying Macklemore the opportunity to go out and perform with Ed Sheeran is they are willing to collude,” Kaepernick said on the MeidasTouch podcast. “The [NFL owners] are openly colluding.” Macklemore had been a supporting act on Sheeran’s tour. During an appearance at New Jersey’s MetLife stadium he told the crowd he wanted the people of Gaza and “the occupied West Bank” to know “we have not forgotten about them”. He also said “free Palestine”. It was “exclusion day”, the deadline by which students without complete immunizations are barred from returning to class. Instead of turning families away, school district leaders partnered with the county health department to vaccinate kids nearby so they could go back to their desks. That day, 42 middle and high school students were vaccinated to protect against tetanus, pertussis and meningitis, among other diseases. “We’ve been doing this for a couple of years now, and it’s really effective,” said Lora Werner, director of the Delaware county health department. The vaccination day is one piece of the county’s back-to-school immunization campaign, as measles cases climbed to 693 in Pennsylvania as of 14 September and this year so far claimed the lives of four residents. The campaign includes a mobile vaccine clinic – a 33ft traveling RV that brings vaccinations to pop-up community events – school district partnerships and vaccination data transparency, all to keep immunization rates from sliding. The push is a local answer to a national problem. The country’s top public health official, Robert F Kennedy Jr, has spent his time in office questioning the efficacy of vaccines and undermining vaccine science, culminating in a recent Trump executive order that seeks to break apart the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) shot and shrink the list of vaccines recommended for American children. The administration’s claims about vaccine safety are not just false, but are actively costing lives, advocates said. Peter Max, pop artist known for his colorful psychedelic style, dies at 88 — Los Angeles Times (@latimes.com) 2026-09-17T23:31:08.454Z RIP Peter Robert Kraft, once the NFL’s good guy, is just another billionaire silencing Macklemore | NFL | The Guardian Six years ago, in the middle of a “racial reckoning” that never was, a White House that had begun out of control reached its chaotic apex. Federal officials were sweeping citizens off American streets in unmarked vehicles, surrounding the Lincoln Memorial with armed guards and rolling military vehicles through residential neighborhoods in a fascist reaction to protests against the murder of George Floyd. It was at this point that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, realizing it had all gone too far, appeared on a Zoom and admitted his league was “wrong” for not listening to its players when they had protested against police brutality. The implication was clear: more than any other sports league, the NFL was harshest in its reaction to the protests that began with Trayvon Martin in 2012 and continued with Ferguson, Baltimore and Colin Kaepernick. By blackballing Kaepernick, sitting by while broadcast partners refused to air the national anthem to undermine the protests, and, most embarrassingly, Goodell’s draconian announcement that teams would be subject to fines if players showed dissent, the NFL had proven itself to act in the most un-American of ways. This week, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft showed he has learned nothing from those years. He banned Macklemore from supporting Ed Sheeran at the Patriots’ Gillette Stadium over the rapper’s vocal support for Palestine – something that has become a career-threatening political position as dangerous as kneeling during the national anthem. Kraft imposed his own version of authoritarianism: Macklemore claims that Kraft not only banned him from his stadium, but appeared to influence other NFL owners to stop the rapper from appearing at most of Sheeran’s other stadium dates. For his part, Kraft says his decision to stop Macklemore from performing at Gillette was due to both Macklemore’s “recent actions” and “a broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery that we believe has been deeply offensive and hurtful to the Jewish community”. In 2014, Macklemore apologized after he wore a wig, beard and hooked nose at a Seattle concert, which critics said was an anti-semitic caricature. It is unclear how long repairs will take, although The Associated Press estimates three to five weeks, citing two regional officials. The 1,200km (746-mile) pipeline connects the kingdom’s main oil-producing fields in the east of the country with Yanbu port on the Red Sea coast in the west, allowing Saudi crude to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, which has largely remained closed since the United States-Israel war on Iran began on February 28. As the world’s second-largest oil producer, Saudi Arabia’s ability to keep crude flowing has significant consequences for global energy markets. Al Jazeera asked experts what alternatives remain, how the disruption could affect buyers worldwide, and what it means for the kingdom’s revenues. In Gaza, AI systems have been used to determine potential bomb targets, contributing to the scale of the killing of Palestinians there as recently documented in the award-winning documentary NAZA. Israel has not only used AI in its genocidal war on Gaza but also in the occupied West Bank, where it has systematically been weaponised to survey Palestinian land and expedite forced displacement, according to researchers and rights activists. The Turkish media outlet PalDigital, citing rights activists and Israeli media reports, highlighted how Israel uses AI tools – and specifically a product called ImiSight developed by the Israeli weapons manufacturer Rafael – to monitor vast swathes of land and observe changes that can then be used as justifications for demolitions. Why did it crash? NBC4’s helicopter was one of several news aircraft flying over the scene of a deadly bus crash in Chatsworth on Tuesday evening at sunset. It’s common for multiple news choppers to arrive at the scene of breaking news, beaming live images for newscasts and streaming. But around 7 p.m., something went horribly wrong. In a matter of seconds, the NBC4 chopper dropped out of the sky, crashing into shipping containers and vehicles outside a warehouse a few blocks away, bursting into flames. Two station journalists, reporter Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw, were killed along with a bystander on the ground. Federal investigators are now trying to figure out what went wrong. The Times interviewed several experts, who reviewed recordings of the chopper’s final moments. They offered insights into the helicopter itself, its movements that afternoon and what is known about how its mechanics work. They also accuse Iran’s theocratic government of carrying out crimes against humanity against its own people, in a report published Thursday. The report, while not binding, adds to international evidence gathered about crimes in the war in Iran, and could eventually be used in efforts to reach justice in international courts. The fact-finding mission on Iran, chaired by jurist Sara Hossain of Bangladesh, is made up of independent experts and was created in 2022 by the Human Rights Council, the U.N.’s top human rights body, which is based in Geneva. Omar with vinegar sentenced to 14 months in prison GOOD! The man who sprayed vinegar at Democratic U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar during a Minneapolis town hall was sentenced Thursday to 14 months in prison after reaching a deal with prosecutors. The sentencing of 56-year-old Anthony Kazmierczak came nearly eight months after the Jan. 27 assault. At the time, Minneapolis-St. Paul was facing an immigration crackdown that led to angry protests, arrests and the killing of two U.S. citizens by federal officers. Kazmierczak was also sentenced to three years of supervised release, which includes no contact with Omar. U.S. marshals escorted him from the courtroom after he was sentenced. “This wasn’t a spur of the moment act,” U.S. District Judge Joan N. Ericksen said before handing down the sentence, noting that Kazmierczak had secured tickets for the town hall weeks in advance. Maybe the most important political story of our time. Fuelled by exceptionally warm ocean conditions across the tropical Pacific – and developing alongside the human-driven climate crisis – El Niño is virtually guaranteed to grow to a very strong intensity towards the end of this year and into 2027. The World Food Programme has warned that about 50 million people will probably be pushed into acute hunger due to the exceptionally intense weather system, while UN secretary-general António Guterres said this month that El Niño was “being supersized before our eyes”. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) argued Wednesday that House GOP leaders sent the lower chamber home early because they found other Republicans in support of his push to impeach Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. “The fact that they didn’t vote on it tells me that they did a whip check, and they probably found that there were some other Republicans, besides me, that were going to vote for this, or at least didn’t want to be on the record supporting Hegseth,” he told host Kaitlan Collins on CNN’s “The Source.” The outgoing Kentucky libertarian, a frequent critic of President Trump, introduced eight articles of impeachment against Hegseth on Tuesday. Massie accused Hegseth of violating his “oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States,” citing his handling of the Iran war and operations to kill alleged drug traffickers in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean. The steep-sided hole measured about 728 feet across, the length of two football fields, and up to 141 feet deep, equivalent to three vertically stacked yellow school buses, according to NASA. It’s the solar system’s biggest known impact crater carved out in recent times. Such a large-scale event is estimated to occur only once every 132 years, researchers said, making this a treasure trove of information as NASA prepares to build a base for astronauts on the moon. “This event constitutes a statistically rare, effectively once-in-a-lifetime observation,” the scientists wrote in one of two studies appearing on the subject Wednesday in the journal Science Advances. Steiner, a onetime chief executive of Waste Management, has spent most of the past year atop the postal service navigating political and financial challenges. He’s pressing Congress for changes that would help him resolve what he has called a “liquidity crisis.” And Trump’s efforts to largely eradicate mail voting turned the postal service into an unlikely arbiter of who is eligible to vote just months before this year’s critical midterm elections, a role Steiner seemingly had little interest in playing. Unlike Trump, who was sharply critical of the Supreme Court decision and ridiculed some of the justices, Steiner offered no assessment of the court’s action. I still wouldn’t use a mail in ballot! Members of the board who were removed by the administration filed an emergency motion Thursday in Washington in a dispute that has echoes of Trump’s effort to place his name on the Kennedy Center. The motion was filed as an emergency petition, alleging that a contractor has already been selected to carve Trump’s name into the Constitution Avenue headquarters that the administration sought to shutter as part of the Elon Musk-led DOGE effort to shrink the government. The former board members said in their motion that they had asked Kenneth Jackson, the DOGE official serving as acting president of the USIP, to ensure the carving would not happen as they pursue litigation to preserve the independent nonprofit created by Congress.
