Kitchen Table Kibitzing 9/12/26 [1]

['Glen The Plumber', 'Blue Boomer', 'Greg Dworkin']

Date: 2026-09-12

Today was the celebration of Andrew P Hill high school’s 70th anniversary. Retired congress member, Mike Honda was asked to give the keynote speech. I did not graduate from Andrew Hill as my family moved when I was in 8th grade. But Mike was the vice principal at my middle school and asked if I’d like to attend …of course.

I was up early this morning to make coffee …the least I owed him after keeping him up late bullshitting and going thru a whole bottle of wine. After some much needed coffee we headed down the hill to my (and his) old stomping grounds.

We arrived a couple hours before the event to meet the staff and tour the much updated school grounds. The principal was very excited to show Mike the wall of yearbooks. He was able to find all 70. Mike reaches into his pack and pulls out his 1957 yearbook …the school’s inaugural year. Andrew Hill’s first year was only freshmen and sophomore classes as the school was still under construction.

I would have been the class of ’82. Halfway thru the third row. Seeing how many rows below and how much closer I was to Mike than the current class …yikes… I’m old.

Anyway, there may be more famous people that went thru Andrew Hill …but Mike is most beloved. Shadowing him as he ran into many former students and hearing all the stories was like living history. While he put the finishing touches on his speech I perused his yearbook. Gotta say …the girls really seemed quite fond of Mike.
