When Causes Become Talking Points [1]

Few people start off fighting for a cause because it’s a good political talking point, unfortunately a lot of folks who start fighting for causes end up being caught up in talking points and political points and soon the cause itself and the people they were trying to help get relegated to the back burner.

It doesn’t matter if we are talking BLM, Trans folks, Gaza, Woke or anything in between. As soon as a social movement becomes mainstream they all seem to suffer the same fate. A few loud voices, usually but not exclusively not those of the cause, take over the movement, become the ones listened to and the cause is turned into a political talking point.

BLM stopped being about police brutality and became about so called riots, Trans folks issues became about ‘men in sport” or defining “what is a woman”, Gaza became about who could say genocide or not and AIPAC, Woke became about virtue signaling and all the good that could have come out of these causes slowly sank out of view, the current anti-ice movement is now focused on identifying Ice agents to dox them.

One would think that the more people joined a cause, the easier it would be to help the folks in said cause, sadly often the opposite happens, the more people are in a cause, the less it keeps its status as a cause and soon becomes litmus test, a talking point, a agenda item… do you know how many times I’ve seen people say “well I search their names along with x cause and nothing came up!” as if that was an indication of someone’s dedication or actions for a cause.

There aren’t any more protests to free gaza, there aren’t any more Black fist adorning profiles, no more rainbows either let alone pink and blue flags, the word woke has become something to stay away from, anit-ice protest have died down,.. even as racism is at an all time high since the 60’s, even as Gaza seems to have more buildings destroyed than standing, even as Trans teens suicides are on the uptick, even as we reach new numbers in immigrant detainments… lots of voices are raised in vocal arguments, but few are being saved.

When causes become talking points, the victims aren’t gone, they aren’t saved, they aren’t helped, the louder the voices, the more devastation in their wake. Talk supersedes actions and causes and people die for lack of action.

I’m not offering any solutions here, I’m just sad. IYKYK
