KosAbility Open Thread: [1] ['Steven Park', 'Rob In Vermont', 'Chitown Kev'] Date: 2026-08-30 I’m going to study Photography in my next life…. Welcome to the KosAbility Open Thread this evening! Hope you are well. I got some good news this week in a letter from Social Security informing me that I will be moved from SSDI (Social Security Disabilty Insurance) to Social Security because of my age. There is no difference in the check, but I will be released to earn as much as I’m capable of. I was limited to working only 12 hours per week working as a cashier for Home Depot under SSDI. I will be working 16 hours per week this fall and winter to see if my body holds up before taking on more hours in the spring. I know from the past, I don’t handle working over 20 hours per week well. Other thoughts…. As many of you may know, I received my master’s degree in 2002 in Rehabilitation Counseling. The DSM-4 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fourth Edition Revision) was part of my studies. If I remember right, the DSM-4 cost me over $100 for a used textbook. I was able to find an online version of the DSM-5-TR on Internet Archive. I wanted to know just the changes were autism and Asperger’s disorder in the DSM-4 and the DSM-5. “Autism spectrum disorder encompasses disorders previously referred to as early infantile autism, childhood autism, Kanner’s autism, high-functioning autism, atypical autism, pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified, childhood disintegrative disorder, and Asperger’s disorder” (DSM-5, Page 218). I am curious about how prevalent was autism in the United States: “Prevalence Frequencies for autism spectrum disorder across the United States have been reported to be between 1% and 2% of the population, with similar estimates in child and adult” (DSM-5, Page 223). I may, in the future, write a more in-depth diary on autism spectrum disorder. Thanks for reading this post. What’s happening in your life?
