These dangerous impulses interfere with certainty. They encourage questions. They cause citizens to concern themselves with circumstances that are none of their business. Worst of all, they can lead otherwise sensible people to help those who are different, unfortunate, mistaken, unpopular or simply in need. Fortunately, these failures are easily recognized. TOLERANCE DIFFERENT IS UGLY! SAMENESS IS BEAUTY! Difference causes discomfort. Different customs, beliefs, skin tone, or culture can only result in discord. If it is good enough for us it is good enough for them. Why tolerate something you would never choose for yourself? Sameness is comfortable. Sameness means our choices are always the correct choices. And if our choices are correct, different choices are incorrect. We need not hate anyone. We need merely insist that other people become us so that there is no longer anything troublesome to tolerate. We only recognize ourselves. Our kind knows our kind. KIND SEES KIND! A Jewish teacher stops at a well and speaks with a Samaritan woman. She herself remarks upon the boundary between them. John 4:7–26. Why would he speak to her? Rejected. UNDERSTANDING SUFFERING IS THE SIN OF POOR CHOICES! CIRCUMSTANCE IS NO EXCUSE! Someone is born poor? Their parents chose poorly. Someone works for decades and loses a pension? They should have had the foresight to have chosen a safer employer. Someone suffers from illness, mental illness, inherited disease or plain bad genetic luck? We can only question their choices. Someone encounters hatred or bigotry because of something they cannot change, doesn’t choose to blend in, or worse, knows who they are inside? They should have been someone else. Once every circumstance has been converted into a choice, suffering is simple to understand. Winners made good choices. Losers made bad ones. If children suffer, the sin is theirs and their parents’. Circumstance is its own Justice. MISERY IS JUSTICE! Jesus rejected the premise that the blind man’s sin or that of his parent’s, caused his blindness. John 9:1–3. Circumstance. What an excuse. We reject the rejection. REASON QUESTIONS CONFUSE TRUTH! CERTAINTY NEVER QUESTIONS! Never question what we tell you. If what we tell you seems wrong, do not question it. You are wrong. And asking the question is wrong. We are certain, so certain that we can say we know what we know. You should too. Contradictory facts are falsehoods. Don’t believe your own eyes. If you see contradictions, you need glasses or re-education. Most importantly, certainty frees us from ever knowing that we were wrong. REASON BEGETS FAILURE! Young Jesus sits among teachers. He listens to them. He asks questions. They discuss answers. Luke 2:46–47. Look where that got him. DECENCY RENDERING AID REAPS POVERTY! STINGINESS IS GODLINESS! Helping people is dangerous. Feed someone today and tomorrow they will be hungry again. What good was that? If you help someone who cannot pay, then why should anyone pay? Helping the needy is a poor decision. That poor decision takes food out of your mouth and money out of your pocket. Fortunately, shame is inexpensive. The poor, the needy, and the sick shame themselves. They are parasites. When they get aid they get something you didn’t get or worse, you gave it away. Reinforce and remind them of their shame. Our prosperity is measured by our stinginess. Our generously supplied shame transforms and improves parasites, or eliminates them. Problem solved. SHAME ANSWERS NEED! Hungry people surround Jesus. He feeds them. Matthew 14:13–21. No means test. No lecture about dependency. Not even a seminar on the character-building properties of an empty stomach. Jesus could have taught them far more by letting them starve. Tolerance, Understanding, Reason and Decency can only make a turd. REJECT TURD! TOLERANCE. UNDERSTANDING. REASON. DECENCY. TURD. These Four terrible failures of Tolerance, Understanding, Reason and Decency destroy our beautifully simple world. KNOW OUR TRUTH. IT SETS YOU FREE. REJECT TURD! TURD STINKS! BUILD CHARACTER! FLUSH THE TURD! But what about our families, our friends, or just-us? Is that Justice? All are measured in the first person. Compassion is for us but is enabling for others. Our circumstances are complicated, but yours are bound in excuses. Questions that challenge their beliefs reveal their ignorance, but our motives and morality cannot be challenged. Tolerance is for our freedom, but tolerating the not-us is worse than moral surrender. What is underneath the red X hasn’t changed. We have. Our moral and cognitive fluidity decides when the Xs are lifted. This poster deliberately uses Christian imagery because the contradiction becomes unusually difficult to hide. A person can profess devotion to Jesus while finding “perfectly respectable arguments” for condemning behavior remarkably similar to that attributed to Jesus. But this isn’t an exclusively Christian problem, a conservative problem, a liberal problem or any culture’s problem. It is a primate problem. We are remarkably good at constructing moral principles after discovering whose banana is involved. So I am not going to tell you that every circumstance excuses every choice, every difference must be tolerated, every doubt is wise, or every act called kindness produces good. That would merely move the X permanently to the other side and call the resulting certainty enlightenment. The X cannot simply be abolished but must be examined. When and Why did I put it there? What changed when I changed the person underneath it? What evidence would move it? What do I gain by keeping it there? What would it cost me to discover that I placed it wrongly? Now change the person underneath the X, and think about who it could be: friend, enemy, another human, another creature….one of God’s creations. Apply the inversions. Did the X move? If it did, perhaps there is a perfectly good reason. Or perhaps you just caught a glimpse of who is in your mirror. I showed you what I see.
