Railroad History Shorts — Chessie System [1] ['Alan Kandel'] Date: 2026-08-26 The Cheshire cat Chessie that was adored so by legions of admiring fans, went into retirement in August 1987. Chessie System locomotives, cabooses and freight cars, dressed in an attractive blue, yellow and vermillion paint scheme, bore the name Chessie System on their flanks, while on the noses of company locomotives wearing the attractive livery, with rare exception, were emblazoned the Chessie “C”. (See bottom photo). Today, it’s rare to find a former Chessie System diesel locomotive or piece of rolling stock attired in this scheme outside of their being exhibited in a railroad museum, park, next to a station somewhere or converted to living space on someone’s yard as a static display item. The Chessie kitten may be history, but because such has been relegated to the annals of history and to the pages of history books and the like, no way will this famous feline ever be forgotten!
