Gary, Indiana [1]

Okay, I’m not Black, I don’t live in Gary, Indiana. So, of course it’s taken over 10 days for me to hear about what is happening there. I read everyday about the power outages, food and gas shortages and just plain desperation that is happening in Ukraine and Crimea. And nothing about Gary, Indiana. 10 days. I searched for past diaries thinking maybe I missed or overlooked something. But I can’t find anything. (feel free to link to any diary you’re aware of)

This video is interesting because he spent the first 2 minutes showing white people complaining before he used the rest of his time showing a black woman sitting in her car explaining what to do to get from the car to the house safely. https://youtu.be/XN8QbONzRYQ?si=q8QAilxjfJhSVwnx

This is pathetic… The utility company suspended repairs because an employee was shot at. There have been reports of looting. They have one of the highest crime rates and yet Trump has not sent in the National Guard. He’s always so concerned about crime that you would think he would jump at the chance. But, no, because the NG may see that they could be helpful and set up food/water station or help clear all the fallen trees.

All the YouTube videos that I’ve been watching since discovering this have so few of views and mostly covered by local news. So I went searching I did find that NYT did have an article yesterday. After just a little research I found that Gov. Braun did sign a Declaration of Emergency on Aug 13 but didn’t request help from FEMA until yesterday. And it looks like there will be a class action law suit against the power company, NIPSCO. https://youtu.be/6DxIBUjCBTE?si=zQYXyF4mA3MDgUuM

I have seen the excuses that this is not because they are a black community, that white majority communities have also been effected by extended power outages, But this just isn’t so. This is systemic. The infrastructure they are trying to repair is horrible to begin with. The crime rate decreases the ability to get things done. The lack of national coverage reinforces that this is a city that just doesn’t matter to the rest of the country.

Am I missing something? 10 days! There is no excuse…

Let ‘er rip about Trump and this regime. And then maybe we can find out if there’s any way we can help.

… This is only the second time I’ve attempted to write a diary since the change over so I don’t know how to import images, if bolding is possible, etc. I’m still waiting for cataract surgery so it’s kind of a struggle to even write this. But this just has my blood boiling and I had to do something.
