José Chajón-Raxón is the third immigrant to die after being held at Delaney Hall, an ICE detention center that reopened in May 2025 amid the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown. A nurse responded when Chajón-Raxón experienced a medical emergency and “witnessed Chajón-Raxón experiencing seizure-like activity”, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Medical personnel were called, and he was transported to a hospital, the DHS said in a statement shared with the Guardian. ICE agents had arrested Chajón-Raxón before bringing him to Delaney Hall on 18 July, the agency said. Four days later, Chajón-Raxón was “released from ICE custody on July 22”, according to the agency, which did not provide further details about the circumstances of his release. Leavitt started her tenure by telling a wild falsehood at her very first news conference, when she claimed that the Biden administration had planned to use $50m in taxpayer dollars to send condoms to Gaza. Later the same day, the Guardian reported that the claim was directly contradicted by USAID records. Sean Spicer, Trump’s first White House press secretary, also told perhaps his most blatant lie the first time he stepped behind the podium in the White House briefing room. The day after Trump’s first inauguration in 2017, Spicer summoned reporters to the briefing room and relentlessly scolded them for not reporting the lie that “this was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration – period – both in person and around the globe”. Visual evidence made it clear that this was untrue. Not so fast, boomers | California | The Guardian Kids will be kids!! Beware, Americans: there’s a battery-powered threat cruising down beach paths, rolling up hiking trails and zipping along the streets of our cities. By now, you’ve probably seen footage on social media of teens racing along streets, popping wheelies and weaving around car traffic with reckless abandon. The Los Angeles Times recently dubbed them the “new Hells Angels”. Other news outlets have referred to them as “motorized menaces” terrorizing communities. Sounds scary. In reality, these aren’t members of a federally designated violent criminal organization – they’re young adults riding electric two-wheeled vehicles: e-motorcycles, e-scooters and e-mopeds that have often been illegally built or modified to reach higher speeds than legal and regulated electric bicycles. The proliferation of these vehicles is especially noticeable in fair-weather California, where mostly male riders have made headlines for dangerous antics and fatal crashes. Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv currently receives only 1% of the interceptor missiles it needs from Washington, as Russian strikes continue to outpace the country's air defences. #EuropeNews — Euronews (@euronews.com) 2026-08-13T19:30:17.000Z The Lakers have become a poker chip for some of the most powerful men in America | NBA | The Guardian I haven’t read it YET! but exactly with just reading the headline!! Bet LeBron is happy he checked out!! One of the most brutal lessons we must learn as fans is that the team we shed blood, sweat and tears for is seen by those who own it as just one of many assets. That gap has never felt as wide as it does this week. On Wednesday, ESPN reported that the Los Angeles Lakers are set to change hands, for the second time in 10 months, for $12.5bn, a sum that would be a record for any North American sports team. (The deal must be approved by the NBA’s board of governors before it can go through.) The buyers aren’t diehards who saved up every penny like the good Dr Jerry Buss in the 1970s. Those days are gone. If and when the deal is approved, the new owners will be venture capitalist Josh Kushner and his business partner, Bob Iger. Kushner is the younger brother of Jared Kushner, the titleless Wormtongue to Donald Trump’s Saruman. Iger used to run Disney. These men have connections across the political world and influence in every corner of the American empire. A franchise woven into a city’s identity should never become an asset vastly wealthy people move around like a chip around a poker table. But that is exactly what the Lakers are about to become. The way the deal came together should terrify anyone who still thinks sports belong to the fans. Mark Walter took control of the team from the Buss family last October at a valuation of roughly $10bn. Now he is set to cash out around $2bn richer. That’s not how this is supposed to work. The old guard, like Buss, used to guard their NBA teams like heirlooms and pass them down. Walter is set to flip the team after less than a year. Homeland Security investigators secretly recorded conversations, infiltrated Signal chats and obtained financial records for labor unions and progressive groups as part of a wide-ranging surveillance effort during Operation Metro Surge. In recent days, government contractors have started to bulldoze sensitive areas of Texas’s scenic Big Bend National Park as part of the Trump administration’s $46.5 billion push to build a massive wall along the U.S.-Mexico border — a move that has triggered bipartisan opposition. “I believe in border security 100%,” Terrell County Sheriff Thaddeus Cleveland, a Republican and former Border Patrol agent, told Fox San Antonio. “Believe in even installation of barriers where they’re needed. But I can tell you that specific area … even just what they’ve done, unnecessary.” Last week, Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin relaying his constituents’ concerns. The US government is about to sell 30-year bonds at the highest interest rate in a quarter of a century — Bloomberg News (@bloomberg.com) 2026-08-13T19:30:24.879Z Trump White House says it’s losing $19B-$26B a year in revenue as countries dodge tariffs The Trump White House said in a new report on Thursday that countries are routing their exports through third countries to avoid U.S. tariffs, estimating that there are tax revenue losses of $19 billion to $26 billion annually. The report specifically highlights that China responded to new tariffs in 2018 by sending their goods to other nations ranging from Mexico to Malaysia for packaging and limited assembly — a practice known as transshipping. That pattern made it look like U.S. imports from China had dropped, but enabled Beijing to continue growing its manufacturing sector in ways that could challenge U.S. factories and employment. Peter Navarro, the White House trade adviser, told reporters on a conference call that China is laundering its exports through more than 40 countries, though he claimed that the issues raised in the report were really more about other nations enabling the avoidance of tariffs.
