Historical note: In those days servants washed clothes in streams and beat them dry. That’s what the ‘peasant beating the water’ refers to. It’s just sheer absurdity – like the pack-carrying Pages clopping coconut halves together to sound like galloping horses (another status symbol being mocked). ⚔️ ⚔️ ⚔️ ⚔️ ⚔️ ⚔️ We always kind of liked this discussion on Mandates of Government, and would play it for our students and evaluate mock-seriously the issues of Divine Right, Anarcho-Syndicalism, the Social Contract and abuse of power: Sir, the peasants are revolting!
