Fair Season

It’s the middle of summer, and the season of state and local fairs is upon us. Lots of them in our area. There are 423 Fairs in United States as of July, 2026. The highest number of Fairs of United States are in California and Ohio with 40 businesses and 20 businesses, respectively. California makes up approximately 9.5% of all Fairs in the United States.

We attended fairs wherever we lived, but we never miss the Sonoma County Fair. Ours features an expansive Hall of Flowers (indoors) with many specialty plants outdoors. With our currant heatwave I wonder how the latter will survive. My favorite is the exhibition hall, where vendors sell hot tubs plus many clever gadgets you will never need. The food is a big draw, very expensive but tasting delightful in the Fair environment. This year the tradition of free ice cream in the afternoon will be reinstated; always fun.

For years there was horse racing but that has ended due to rising costs and a shrinking pool of racehorses. We go from the calm…..quilts. cakes, and poetry, to Monster Trucks, a Tractor Pull, and even sheepdog trials. Fairs are down-home; unsophisticated, and just plain fun.

I have fond memories of the Wisconsin State Fair. Best was the corn, with the whole ear dipped completely into a vat of sweet Wisconsin butter.

Of course here I wanted to insert the YouTube of the Corn Kid, but no matter how I try, I get error 153. Anyone could try.

Anyway, do y’all have a decent fair? Are you unsophisticated enough to attend? When I mention we’re going, to many people around here, they cop an attitude and sneer. Their loss.
