Russian Losses in Ukraine — July Update [1] ['Greg Dworkin', 'Crimson Quillfeather', 'Chloris Creator'] Date: 2026-08-01 This is an update to my diary from last month The Trends Behind Russia’s Growing Logistical Nightmare in Ukraine – Daily Kos detailing the long-term quarterly trends in Russian losses from their illegal war of conquest against Ukraine since 2022. This update will focus on their shorter-term losses over the past 16 months through July 2026. The title chart is the average daily Russian casualty count by month, and the first thing to note is that Russian manpower losses have seen a significant rise over the past several months, with July 2026 closing in on nearly 1400 per day — the highest average monthly loss since January 2025, and the fourth highest monthly loss overall. This total of more than 40,000 killed or seriously wounded in a month is now substantially higher than what Russia can actually replace with their current level of ‘recruitment’, and is the prime reason Putin will almost certainly have to call for a much higher degree of mobilization after the next set of elections to the Duma in September if he remains serious about continuing to prosecute this obscenely unjustified ‘special military operation’. Ukraine Defence Ministry data, compiled by Irontortoise This second chart indicates that last month’s huge increase in the toll of Russian supply vehicles was no fluke, with average daily losses now reaching 450 and continuing the Ukrainian stranglehold over Russian logistics in Crimea and along the front lines. Ukraine Defence Ministry data, compiled by Irontortoise This third chart illustrates that Russian artillery losses remain near all-time highs at more than 60 per day on average, and that armor losses (tanks and AFVs) have also crept up to their highest level in a year. Indeed, thanks to a number of suicidal tank attacks in July, Russian tank losses were at their highest level since April 2025. All-in-all, it looks like Ukrainian battlefield tactics are continuing to take an ever-increasing toll on Russian military resources, both men and material, and it’s difficult to see how this can continue much longer without the politically dangerous expedient of complete mobilization.
