Trump throws another tariff tantrum [1] ['Emily Singer'] Date: 2026-07-21 President Donald Trump on Monday announced that he is implementing another round of retributive tariffs, this time an obscene 50% levy on certain goods from Canada. The Trump administration said the tariffs—which impact everything from plywood and cement to wine and hockey sticks—are punishment for what he said is Canada’s “discriminatory treatment” of American cars, dairy, and alcohol. They are set to go into effect in about 30 days. However, given that Trump is known to pull a TACO (“Trump always chickens out”) and cave right before his economically disastrous tariffs take hold, it’s unclear if Americans will actually be forced to pay these import taxes, or if he’ll delay or scrap the tariffs altogether. Whether or not the tariffs go into effect, they serve as yet another reminder for voters that Trump doesn’t care about making life more affordable. Rather, he cares only about getting revenge on anyone whom he feels has wronged him. In this case, he is mad at Canada for wildfire smoke that blew across the United States, causing air quality issues for millions in the Midwest to the Northeast. The New York City skyline is seen through a cover of wildfire smoke, from Jersey City, New Jersey, on July 17. AP “We are holding Canada responsible for the fact that they are not properly maintaining their Forests, and Brush therein, and the United States is being unnecessarily invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air, the quality of which is dangerous, and totally unacceptable!” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Friday, adding, “This is Willful Negligence, and becoming a yearly occurrence, costing the United States Billions of Dollars, which cost of this pollution must of necessity be added to the TARIFFS Canada is currently paying.” The claim that Canada unfairly treats American imports is clearly a smoke screen—pun intended—to get around the Supreme Court ruling that most of Trump’s retributive tariffs from 2025 were illegal. The new tariffs on Canada come on top of 25% tariffs Trump imposed this month on thousands of Brazilian imports. And Trump is reportedly set to announce more tariffs on other countries “as soon as this week,” the Financial Times reported. Ultimately, Trump’s original tariffs—which spiked inflation and hit industries like farming particularly hard—were overwhelmingly unpopular with Americans. They understood that despite Trump’s assertions about foreign governments paying the tariffs, it is American consumers who end up paying the import taxes through price hikes on goods and services. The Supreme Court ruling that axed most of Trump’s initial rounds of tariffs was actually a political gift for him since it ended the inflationary import taxes. Yet Trump, ever the egomaniac, couldn’t handle his pet project being taken from him, and now he is bringing his unpopular and disastrous trade policy back to the forefront as the midterm elections near. It’s political malpractice, and yet another way Trump is working to screw his own party. You know what Trump always says, Republicans: You knew he was a snake before you let him in.
