Write On! Forgetting [1]

Greetings, writers. Memory is imperfect. It fails even the best of us, in our prime and in our dotage. It fails societies, too. Civilizations have been lost, countries stuff things they’d rather not recall down the memory hole, and cultures sometimes trade historical truths for convenient, comfortable fiction.

What do your characters remember, and what have they forgotten? Are there things they’ve forgotten that impact the arc of their story? Are there things their culture has forgotten that it desperately needs to remember?

How do they remember, both at an individual and a cultural level? Is it all down to their frail human psyches? Do they journal or keep diaries? What are their museums and their historians like? How do their history books impact the course of their lives, or do they?

Tonight’s Challenge

Write a scene about how something your characters have forgotten causes them grief, or show how remembering something at the last minute saves their bacon. Try to engage at least three senses and limit yourself to a few hundred words or so.
