Now Involved in Planning NATO 2027 Exercises & Training. Putin is A “Genius”. [1] ['News Corpse', 'Thom Hartmann'] Date: 2026-07-09 President Zelenskky was spot on when he recently eviscerated Putin’s argument that Russia’s 2022 Special Military Operation(SMO) invading Ukraine was in Russia’s national security interest … to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO: “Whatever you say about NATO, geopolitics and the Russian language, this war is your personal choice — a war without a real reason. Because Starting in 2027, Ukraine will not only fully participate in NATO exercises but will be front and center in the planning phase … a significant expansion from Ukraine’s current role which involves the execution phase only. This change allows Ukraine to integrate its frontline combat experience into alliance scenarios, enhancing interoperability and testing shared technologies under realistic conditions. Ukraine will join NATO exercise planning from 2027, integrating frontline experience According to experts, such training exercises are traditionally available only to Alliance member states; an exception has been made for Ukraine. Additionally, Ukrainian specialists will join the LCI-X exercises, which focus on developing air defense issues in modern conditions. He stressed that in these exercises the Ukrainian side will act as a notional adversary, modeling the actions of Russian aviation and creating the most realistic scenarios possible. Ukraine will join NATO exercise planning from 2027, integrating frontline experience Colonel Valerii Vyshnivskyi, Director of Program Implementation at the NATO-Ukraine Center for Analysis, Preparation and Education (JATEC), confirmed that while Ukraine is also currently participating in exercises like Steadfast Pyramid, Noble Jolt, and LCI-X during the execution phase, the 2027 transition will enable deeper involvement in scenario development. JATEC’s 2027 program aims to focus on innovation, joint technological testing, and using Ukrainian battlefield lessons to improve Alliance training. We work side by side with NATO officers, but Ukraine is not a member of the Alliance. As a result, we do not have direct access to the NATO Secret environment. To bridge that gap, we created a separate component—a physically isolated NATO Ukraine Secret environment that is connected neither to NATO’s networks nor to Ukraine’s. Information within this environment will be exchanged via physical storage media or in printed form. In practice, this means we have three separate systems: Ukraine Secret, NATO Secret, and the shared NATO Ukraine Secret working environment. The NATO Secret system is already operational. It took Finland and Sweden almost 30 years to get to where Ukraine has in just a couple of years. To be sure part of that could be attributed to national populations of both Finland and Sweden being unsure about whether to join or continue remaining neutral. Finland and Sweden were, however, deeply involved in NATO planning before joining as full members. Although they were not official allies until Finland joined in April 2023 and Sweden in March 2024, they participated extensively in alliance activities through the Partnership for Peace program, which they joined in 1994. Russia, too was offered membership in NATO’s Partnership for Peace program … to foster military and political cooperation between NATO and former Eastern Bloc or neutral states. Then Russian President Boris Yeltsin authorized Russia joining the program on June 22, 1994, and Foreign Minister Andrei Kozyrev officially signed the framework document later that month, making Russia the 21st nation to participate. Guess who, by his actions, put the kibosh on Russia’s participation? Yep, you guessed it, Vladimir Putin. Upon succeeding Yeltsin as the Russian head of state, Putin insisted that Russia should not be considered as just any old run of the mill “partner” and that owing to being a nuclear superpower, Russia must be granted a “special status” and equal footing as a a full member of NATO without having to go through the regular accession process. NATO refused to grant the request which would have gone against its core articles of incorporation. Russia’s participation in the program was later suspended … in April 2014, following Russia’s invasion and annexation of Crimea. With Ukraine’s fast tracked integration into NATO affairs, Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, ostensibly to prevent the eastward expansion of NATO has rather achieved exactly what he didn’t want … in perhaps the short period of NATO’s history since 1949. And are perpetually distrustful and watchful … for historical good reasons. In fact the core the foundations of NATO are based on the persistent and virulent Russian antagonism. The Finns, for example, have a saying about Russians … “ryssä on ryssä vaikka voissa paistaisi” … “a Russian is a Russian even if you fry him in butter.” Indeed.
