The Day a President was Assassinated [1] ['Dan K', 'Mikey Weinstein', 'Matt Z'] Date: 2026-07-06 On july 7th 2021, I was asleep, Nate who had had a bad night was also sleeping besides me, the phone rang and the world shifted. It was my mother, she was whispering “Muriel don’t go out today, don’t go into the streets at all” half asleep I asked “Why?” because this was the first time my mother had ever called to tell me to stay home, and there had been plenty of riots and protests since 2018 so I was puzzled. “They killed Jovenel in his house, they killed him early this morning, don’t go out, no one knows what’s going to happen” then she said “I’m getting a call we’ll talk again, but don’t go out” I said “ok” and hung up. I don’t know how long I sat up in bed trying to sort out my thoughts and feelings, I had written a lot about President Jovenel Moise, criticizing him most of the time, but lately I had come to realize he had good ideas but had been misled (I think) in the early months of his administration. There had been a shift recently and it seemed he had broken away from some bad advisors, I couldn’t help but think is that why he was killed? To this day, while the executors of the assassination have been aprehended and judged, it is still unclear who orchastrated the killing. Finally I got online and tuned in to the news, that’s all my feeds were about, there were even pictures of the body online. But outside, the usual noises of the early morning bustle of my community were missing, no laughing, not shouting, no yelling merchants… nothing. And throughout the day I kept expecting the streets to erupt, everybody was and nothing. Fear was paralyzing the whole country. The quiet, the stillness was worse than the riots and chaos I had become accustomed to, it was scarier. For days we stayed inside, rationing food, waiting for something to happen. Even the children were quiet. Eventually, things started moving again but it was different, everyone was going through motions but there was a sort of resignation now in everyones eyes. Haiti didn’t “explode” after that, it sort of imploded instead. Everything started falling apart, it was like that scene in the neverending story where “the nothing” eats at the world until there’s nothing left. That’s what happened is is happening to Haiti in the wake of this assassination, 5 years ago today. It was not yet 5 o’clock Then rocks started flying, I work at a bank… the front door was shattered rocks landed a few feet from us… a pregnant employee fainted, no one penetrated the bank though. My blood pressure was also shattered, I looked at under my desk and wondered if I should hide there, like they do in the states for mass shootings, then I went to look at the shattered door, my very uncooperating phone was too low on juice to take pictures but you can find them on the web. So there we were over 100 employees stuck at work and unable to go home, some gritted their teeth, left their cars in the parking lot and took their feet for a walk home. The rest of us were more cautious, a few of the foot walkers rushed back in telling of being held and ransonmed or being threathened to become kin to the burning tires. Nerves were frayed, a falling POS caused a co-worker to dive for cover and another to attempt to fly without wings. Time slowed, most of us were reaching out to family members, kids, parents, partners, spouses… everyone was stuck somewhere that was not home. Rumors were flying high, carried by the ever faithful world wide web… as if the reality was not bad enough. The only constant speech was “stay were you are, don’t venture in the streets”… rocks continued to fly without licenses and smoke from the fires caused the sun to go down early. Stuck in limbo, we did as all good limboist do and tried to make light of our situation… that helped some. But worry burrows deep and furrows faces. From time to time I went outside in the parking lot, being one of the few human smokers in my building, followed by the warnings of my friends… but I needed these moments of quiets and peace to settle my nerves. Time passed it was now nearing midnight and the last warning was that things were not going to get better and that anyone caught out after 5 am would get what’s coming to them… my heart tried to scuba dive without an oxigen tank. Then a car went by… who knew human ears could perk up like cats? ours sure did… then another car a few minutes later, we rushed to social media our comon denomitor and yes people were doing the impossible… brave or foolish souls depending on your view were braving the outside to get home… now i have no car… so my perked ears were perked needlessly, as I sat there smoking on a curb I saw a car pull up to our gates, not being brave my first instinct was to run back inside, but my perked cat ears went along with my cat curiosity and led my feet to the gate… “who are you? and did you come to pick up someone? “we are so and so and we are here to pick up co-worker x” Shocked was my only reaction… “x? doesn’t she live near me… can you also drive me home?” “ok” said the good samaritans… as simple as that I became a foolish brave and trough renmants of smoke and ruins of rocks made my way home, we had to stop and move blocks and smoldering remnants of burning tires on the way… they dropped me off at the end of my street, there wasn’t a soul around and it was like a 20 seconds walk to my gate, I walked quickly my heart pounding, but I finally made it home to my boy at 15 minutes past midnight. My boy, 7 years old was waiting for me in the parking lot, sitting on the curb watching the gate… and burst out crying when I walked through the gates Now I cannot sleep so I tell the tale of my horrendous day.
