Field Report – Heat Dome 7/3/26 [1]

This is going to be an experiment – posting from my phone. Our power went out around 7:30 this morning. National Grid says they have a repair crew on it with restoration expected around 11:25.

It’s already 86 degrees F at 10:15. I can hear a neighbor’s generator running up the street. We live on a road out in the country where it’s pretty rural. It’s upstate NY near the state capital.

As a consequence of the heat and the humidity, the past several days have seen violent thunderstorms pass through. Two days ago the local radar showed them popping up spontaneously out of nowhere, without needing a front passing through to spawn them.

One hit last night around 9:30. It was extremely violent with high winds and near continuous lightning. It dropped nearly half an inch of rain. We didn’t lose power then – just today while the sun is shining and fluffy white clouds fill the sky.

Tomorrow is the Fourth of July. I play trombone in a marching band and we have three gigs lined up. The first is at the Port of Albany. We will be performing to welcome the USS Marinette on a port call.

Later we’ll be marching through Berlin, NY. That evening we’ll be at Windham, NY in the Catskills. The heat is a concern. We will be carrying water but I understand some events are being canceled because of the heat risk to the public. Yesterday thousands of people waiting in line to see Big Boy became a mass casualty event when people started collapsing from the heat. Fingers crossed. The Fourth is supposed to be slightly cooler where I’ll be.

Okay – power is back, so I’m finishing this on my laptop.
