Reps. Raskin and Fitzpatrick Join Together Across the Aisle to Support Foreign Aid [1]

A bipartisan push is growing to urge the Administration to release $19B frozen foreign aid funds by the September 30 deadline.

Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick, Jamie Raskin, James Walkinshaw, and Herb Conaway joined over 120 of our advocates at the Capitol, with one demand for the President. Release the foreign assistance funds Congress has already appropriated.

The Trump administration is withholding $19 billion for humanitarian aid and global development programs. By September 30, $3.2 billion of it expires for good. These funds assist in treatment of malaria, guarantee food aid to U.S. allies, and create preventative infrastructure that keeps boots off the ground. If the funds remain frozen, American leadership could lose credibility. As Jamie Raskin said,

Trump has violated the Constitution by shutting down USAID and now withholding $19 billion in congressionally appropriated foreign aid. His refusal to write the checks for USAID’s lifesaving global programs against malaria, HIV/AIDS and hunger is a deadly form of law-breaking.

We just held our Hill Day to bring back foreign aid. Over 120 advocates met with 92 congressional offices. 16 Republican offices pledged to call OMB Director Russ Vought directly and demand he release foreign aid funds. That day, we learned that there is consensus across the aisle. Release the funds, support American interests, save lives. But we can’t do it alone. Assistance can only exist when we mobilize to hold our government accountable. It happens through organizing and events like Hill Day—but organizing costs money.

As Pennsylvania Republican Brian Fitzpatrick said,

This is about American leadership. At its best, American leadership saves lives, keeps our country safe, strengthens our allies, counters our adversaries, and reflects the best of who we are as a nation…This is one of the most effective tools the United States of America has.
